jlong
About 6 months ago or more my headlights started staying on all the time even though they were in the auto position. I didn't think it was the light sensor because the dash lights weren't on, just the headlights. That only leaves the wipers as the suspect because when you turn the wipers on the headlights come on. So I finally decided to look at a service manual and track down the wire diagram. I thought there must be a signal wire that tells the SJB that the wipers were on, and I was correct. After looking at the wiper wire diagram and headlight wire diagram there was a commonality between them, a white wire going to the wiper module in position 2. I assumed that the white wire that goes from the wiper module to the SJB is to tell it the wipers are on. Problem is I couldn't find a clear answer that this was the case. So I reluctantly went out to the car and unplugged the wiper module and as a test I turned the car on. I put the headlights into the auto position and what do you know... the lights weren't on! I turned the switch to the on position and they came on, so that must be it! Of course the wipers didn't work at this point. After I turned the car off I took the module inside for a closer look and to try to figure out what I'm going to do. I didn't want to cut any wires or have to somehow pull the wire out of the connector. So I noticed you could easily remove the case from the module. After disassembling it I noticed that you could bend the pins back easily and there was enough room to put it all back together without interference. Also bending the pin out of the way meant I could easily bend it back if it didn't work. I then went back out to the car to verify which pin was the white wire and I bent the pin back. I then took some pics, which are attached, and put it back together then plugged it back in. It worked out perfectly. Headlights are now off in the auto position and the wipers work just fine. So there is your easy free fix if your headlights are always on, well hopefully... 2010 fusion Wiper Module location.pdf 2010 fusion wiper wire diagram.pdf 2010 fusion headlight wire diagram.pdf Edited August 6, 2015 by jlong
jlong
Oh yeah, I actually didn't like that the headlights came on when you turned the wipers on anyway. If it's raining hard enough I'll decide if the lights should be on.
propwash
I think it was set up that way because in some states, you must have your headlights on if you are using the wipers. Half the drivers out there probably don't know if that is the law in their state or not. Maybe Ford figured they would save some owners a ticket or two by making the lights come on automatically.
drolds1
Nice work. Yes, and as propwash points out, in my state, wipers on-lights on is a law.
jlong
I didn't know that. But a quick google search turned up this. http://drivinglaws.aaa.com/laws/headlight-use/ In Texas: Headlights must be used at nighttime and when visibility is less than 1000 feet. So I'm good.
wrbrower
Worked well. Digging out the module was not pleasant. Moving the fuse box and PCM was a must. I ran out of time else I was going to troubleshoot the module. Since that wire gets held low I suspect a drain-to-source short on a MOSFET.
