2010 Fusion Sport AWD-Worth keeping?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

A few days ago, I purchased a 2010 Fusion Sport AWD with 83k on it for a little under $14k (through Carmax). It has had one owner and spent most of its life in Reno NV. No accidents, damage, etc. Perfect exterior/interior. I have 5 days to return the vehicle for a full refund of my down payment at no penalty, so I would like to figure out if the issues it was diagnosed with warrant this. I took it to a third party mechanic, and they found the following issues;

-Airbag code b0020 (apprently defective driver airbag)

-HVAC code B1082 (defective HVAC actuator?)

-Battery is leaking

-Low coolant (altough he could find no trace of any leaks)

-Transmission Fluid dark and smells burnt

Obviously the biggest concern would be the transmission. Third party told me my car basically has cancer, and to get a new trans would be about $4.5k, and I'm trying to determine if its that bad. I know the regular fusions have a different transmission that supposidly has even more issues, but the Aisin TF-80 is supposed to be more reliable if I'm not mistaken. The car drives great, and I'm wondering if the fluid perhaps just needs to be changed? As for the battery and airbag, the dealership would be willing to replace both for me. Should anything go wrong with the related issues noted, because it is within the first 5 days and I had it inspected, it would be covered for the next 6 months. I was even reimburhsed for the private party inspection. Like I said, the transmission worries me the most; I have an old box of a crown vic with over 160k on it, and the trans fluid still turns out brihgt red every time...

Any help and advice is appreciated!

My honest opinion is If it were me, I would be taking it back. If a mechanic is giving you their expert opinion that it "has cancer" then I would be running from it.

I have a suspicion that the transmission fluid is most likely the original fluid. And there will be opinions all across the spectrum on this (some are documented on this site if you search) but I would say that the fluid should have been changed out between 30K and 50K miles. Again this is just my guess of your cars state and my opinion of maintenance requirements.

I bought my fusion from carmax myself and my opinion is that their cars are a bit overpriced. I still went with them because they had the only car loaded the way I wanted in a 400 mile radius. All that being said I was worried about the cost of things like all of the electronics, auto trans, AWD system, etc. that would be expensive to deal with and bought their extended warranty.

One of my posts on here is having my automatic door locks sensors fixed and it took the dealership 1.5 weeks and a slew of new parts to figure it out. I would have hated to see how much that would have been out of pocket had I not been covered under dealer B2B warranty at the time.

If you do decide to keep the car, perhaps their warranty is something you should consider. They told me that you could still buy it for a little bit after the sale of the car.

Anyway good luck with either way you decide to go.
