Trap25
I want to put 16" winter tires and steel rims on my 2011 sport, factory size is 18". Tire rack site shows a 16" package but my local tire dealer says I need to go with 17" wheel because of the brakes on my sport. The dealer hasn't looked at my car, they just talked to their wheel supplier. Was going to order the 16" package but now I'm not sure who is right. Didn't know the sport had different brakes. Does anyone know who's right.
BlackBetty
16's will fit fine! I wish it came with MazdaSpeed 6 brakes but no dice. But if you plan up upgrading your brakes to the MS6 brakes you will need 17's.
Trap25
Mine is not AWD. Does that make a difference. Also my brakes are stock.
BlackBetty
Yup AWD too. There wouldn't be a difference anyways. 16's will fit. It's close but it wil fit without any issues. I've had mine for 4 years of winter mode.
Trap25
Iowa doesn't get as much snow as Canada, so I would run more dry roads any tire suggestions.
PhilipGerard
No specific tire recommendation but with less snow I would be more concerned with the ice handling properties of the tire. Even on dry roads once the temp is 8° Celsius or lower winter tires have better grip. But you probably know that since you are shopping for tires. Im in Toronto and I always just buy top end Michelin at Costco for summer/winter on both of our vehicles.
BlackBetty
Any winter tire would be fine. I would just avoid studs. We get snow but lots of high warm winds that come off the mountains that melts the snow so I'm driving on dry roads most of the winter too. I'm running Cooper weathermaster st-2's and they're great! Our police in town run Michelin X ice and I have friends that run blizzaks. I've heard nothing but good things from each. Like PhilipGerard mentioned it's all about the average temprature not about the amount of snow that's on the ground.
