Hi all - 99,945 miles. No warning. No knock - not even a tick. 65mph, level cruise...felt a kick to the back of the seat, then a loud sound like a baseball card in bike spokes right next to my ear...then boom....dashboard lights, smoke, small orange flame seen under the cowl....coasted to a stop.

Liberated a rod! Great pics. Enjoy. Yes, that is the wrist pin wedged in the hole of the block. I found the rod pieces outside the block on the plastic bottom cover.post-28610-0-71609300-1450045409_thumb.jpg

I could wax on about top notch maintenance, Mobil 1, Wix filters...what was to be was to be. :ohsnap:

Got a 2008 68k LKQ boneyard motor in place. Works well. Battling through a P0480 error. Did all the sensor swaps, etc to make the 2008 motor work in the per 12-1-06 build 2007 car work....essentially the 2008 was a long block for the original.

Back on the road. Any P0480 advice is appreciated.

Ouch!! That must have been an exciting few seconds as you coasted to a stop. Glad to see that you were able to find another engine and get it installed without too much difficulty. Hope you get things figured out soon. Welcome to the forums and good luck.

Any clue as to what happened? Maybe an issue with oil loss or maybe a plugged oil channel blocking lubrication to one of the pistons? Something break (spark plug, valve seal?) or otherwise get into the cylinder? Not sure if it's an interference engine, but a valve could have gotten stuck for some reason if so.

I pulled the pump for grins, and it was intact, and with minimal wear and gear lash, looks like it would still be able to pump. Top of the piston was unscarred - since it severed from the bottom of the piston, which was in pieces at the bottom of the sump. The wrist pin was wedged so highly, it took 3 hammer blows to break it free from the block's hole. Except for where I was hitting it, there were no pertinent marks on it either, well, except for where it was punched in the opening.

The rod - part of the end cap bolt was left in the upper rod threaded section....so, was it a rod bolt failure that undid it all? The bang/kick to the back of the seat, followed by the rod loosely hitting the crank and then blasting through the block? The missing section of the rod was not to be found, so maybe the rod had a weakness in this location? I'll never know and the old motor's off to the scrap yard on Monday.

BTW - the 'new 2008 long block' is alive and purring well....700 miles over the holidays. The fuel mileage isn't as good as what it replaced, so maybe there's some additional stuff to look at, or have a dealer reprogram...?

How much did the bone yard engine cost you?

From LKQ: $800 incl truck service delivery
