Fusion Sport 3.5 synthetic oil advice?

Hello all, I recently purchased a 2012 CPO Fusion Sport with 44k miles. I love it! It's coming up to the time where I will do an oil change. I do oil changes myself and would like to know if after 44k miles of oil changes being done at a Ford dealership (assuming semi-synthetic) would it be a bad idea to change over to Mobil 1 full synthetic oil. I purchase it cheap at Walmart so it's only a few more dollars than Motorcraft semi-synthetic. After 44k miles, is it a bad idea to change over to full synthetic? Don't want any issues but I live in a cold climate, and think there is advantages of full syn oil for cold starts.

I'd appreciate your thoughts! Mostly concerned about engine problems (very slippery syn oil leaking)

Thanks!

If you're using the same oil grade, there's no problem. Synthetic oil helps on cold starts, on hot summer days and protect and lubricate the engine better than regular oil.

If you want to get the maximum of it, use a synthetic filter (like mobil 1).

I use Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend on my '12 sport with 31k miles. I change the oil and filter every 5k miles.

The recommended do not exceed limit is 10k miles. IMO if you drive like a fugitive avoiding capture, at least change the filter every 5k miles. :)

Mobil 1 5W20 should work fine. Don't overextend the interval, unless you combine the Mobil 1 EP and their EP filter to go with. Since you are in MN, 0W20 might be a slightly better choice.

Another choice is Amsoil, you can see their "infamous" comparison tests slathered all over the Internet :) Either you are a very picky person who prefers the insides of the engine even cleaner than the outside, or you drive your Sport hard. That would justify the higher cost of their products.

Hi Kman937,

My name is Penny

I know it's been years since your query.

I am curious to now inquire if, your 2012 Fusion Sport, that you bought in 2016, was sold with an engine/beauty cover, which may have been light gray/silver with your engine size in red letters?

I bought my 2012 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5 V6 new, from Ford Dealership & I had, until recently a light gray/silver color engine cover(*per son who's a mechanic they call cover a "beauty" cover), with red lettering of 3.5 of engine size.

Sadly, I just noticed last Sunday 6/4/23 my emgine/beauty cover, for some odd reason, is now missing.

The last time my car was worked on at Ford, by their tech, was ONLY to change my oil, test battery, fluid check/top off & tire rotate last on 6/2/22.

I say all this bc, 'they' the Ford Service Dude & his Service Mgr, had some legit issues, with my inquiring, why their tech, would need to remove my cover, for Only an oil change.

Obviously, I was told that tech, had no literally reason to remove my engine cover last yr. Duh.. that is a 'no brainer'.

I ALSO have had no reason either, to touch my engine cover, let alone pop my hood since last June 2022.

I of course was questioned if, I have had any other work done on car at Ford or elsewhere.

Stated..nope I only allow Ford, (now sadly), to do ALL work & ALL printed proof is in my glovebox if, you need to check. I have no reason to lie or make this cover up.

Long story shortened..I'm told I never had one, by Service dude bc, he stated he looked it up..

I stated you're wrong bc, your other Service Co-worker pointed out to your Service Mgr in front of me, there are 3 screw holes, where engine cover would have, been attached on my engine.

Service Mgr having a look of disgust, stated he would now need, to go inquire with his tech. (Come on dude..it's a year later. Tech wouldn't tell you the truth either)

Problem is Service Dude can't, won't or don't want, to find a cover now.

I truly hope they are not obsolete now as it's 2023, which will always bother me if so.

Service Mgr came back, stating he had found & ordered a cover, out of his OWN CURIOSITY, bcz I'm a good customer..mmmkay..whatever dude.

To then find out yesterday 6/7/23, when ALL work on car was finished, for me to retrieve, the other dealer, had sent over a Lincoln printed 'black cover'..wowww.

All that to again to say.. I just need someone like yourself, or anyone else, that knows abt this engine/beauty cover.

If possible to send me confirmation byva picture or a part# of the cover existing, to my email address penny62grutz@gmail.com.

I never thought I would need, to take a picture of the engine for proof.

All I know is my engine cover is gone & cover don't/can't, remove itself while parked in my garage 24/7.

I'm also concerned, that tech did other shady things, to my engine's well last year, once he removed cover & kept/trashed my engine cover. I noticed my car had been running & idling a little rough.

However, once I got car yesterday it seemed to be running smooth. I do not trust them now. I only has 9,200K actual miles. Car is only driven 1 to 2 times a month since purchased.

I am desperate to find the existence of a 3.5 engine cover, for my 2012 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5 V6, l to prove him wrong.

Plus, hopefully someone can tell me where, to find a replacement cover.

Service dude stated if, I can now find a cover off eBay???

He stated they will reimburse me cost & put it on my car no charge. Jeez thanks for...

I hope you see my question & frustrated story.

I don't mind if someone else has knowledge & steers me in the correct direction, as well as sends me proof cover exists(ed). I know it did.

Service dude stated maybe one of sales guys decided, to add it on for addtl looks back then..please..stop the garage bs.

Hi Penny and welcome to the Ford Fusion Forum. I am not 100% sure, but to my recollection, the 2010-2012 Fusion Sport did not have an engine cover. And when I Google "2012 Fusion Sport engine bay", the photos I found show no engine cover. The Lincoln MKZ 3.5L engine did have an engine cover.

Some owners of the Fusion Sport would purchase the Lincoln cover, strip the Lincoln emblems/logos, and dress it up with Fusion Sport, 3.5L and other emblems/logos.

The easiest way to verify if your 2012 Fusion Sport came from the factory with an engine cover (other than Googling, as I did) would be to visit the Parts Department of your Ford Dealer, or another Ford or Lincoln Dealer and ask them. Have your VIN handy (that is how they cross reference how a vehicle was equipped from the factory) and ask them to give you the part number and a price for the engine cover for your vehicle. If there is a cover, they will be able to tell you. If one was/is available, you can purchase it from them, or shop around for a better price.

Concerning what happened to your engine cover? That is impossible for us to ascertain now. You state you purchased your 2012 Fusion Sport new and it had an engine cover, but it certainly seems the 20210-2012 Fusion Sport did not come from the factory with one. So that is certainly a mystery.

In this particular case, I would consider it good luck that they have offered to pay for a new one a year after your vehicle was last in for service with them.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.
