Kipperdoodles
It seems like they don't work as well since my windshield was replaced by the dealshiip. I know the keeping system can be calibrated but the windshield wipers seem to require a lot more rain to trigger even when set to the highest sensitivity. Any ideas? Also the dealership replaced.the windshield with a different looking one. Like where there used to be more of sun shade at the top now there isn't. Is that normal?
drolds1
Was your W/S replaced with an OEM one? If it's aftermarket, it could affect the camera that reads the lane markings as well as the rain sensor. Make sure the area that these sensors "look" through is very clean. You're entitled to an exact replacement. If it's not right, complain to your service mgr.
Kipperdoodles
I know it's not the exact same windshield but how would I know if it's OEM?
andyross
Do the OEM windshields have a Ford logo somewhere on them? Or maybe some other form of ID?
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Replacement windshields (OEM, and at least for the most recent MYs) are from Carlite, AFAIK. Look for info like this:

drolds1
PGW is Pittsburgh Glass Works, formerly PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass). They are an OEM for most major mfrs., including Ford, but not for the Fusion. Therefore, the W/S you got is considered aftermarket. If you Google it, you'll find complaints about PGW glass along with those that are happy with it. You'll probably find complaints for every major glass brand. According to Carlex (Carlite): Carlite, LLC (Carlex Glass) is the exclusive United States source of Carlite® branded aftermarket auto glass products who distributes to wholesalers and retailers. Carlite® is the sole aftermarket glass brand recommended by Ford Motor Company for installation in Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles. The “Carlite®” trademark is used solely for aftermarket glass for Ford Motor Company vehicles and includes windshields, door glass, backlites, and sunroofs and moonroofs. So, if you go by the above, Ford only recommends Carlite for aftermarket replacements. In order to get a OE Ford W/S, you have to specify that when ordering. If this was an insurance claim, you might be asked to pay the difference in price, if any. IDK if the Ford W/S comes with the sensor gel already attached to the glass or if the installer has to put it on. It has to be perfectly flat with no bubbles. It may not have been installed properly. If your rain-sensing wipers are now not operating to your satisfaction, one can only conclude that the replacement W/S has something to with that. I guess you should now complain to the service mgr. and make a service appointment.
Bob B.
2010 Fusion SEL. My Ford dealer in Edmonton quoted $624 for an OEM windshield and $349 for an aftermarket windshield. (Canadian $)
Waldo
Could be that the thickness or the acoustic laminate material is a little different than the OEM, and that causes the rain sensor to misread the amount of rain.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Sometimes the installer doesn't reconnect the sensor when the new windshield is installed, or may have even damaged the rain sensor while removing the rearview mirror from the old windshield. Also, there was a TSB for other MYs/lines that provides for a rain sensor mounting kit, could be useful: http://www.ford-trucks.com/tsbs/fulltext/?do=ViewTSB&tsbmodel=F-150&tsbyear=2009&tsbno=09-24-13 TSB 09-24-13 RAIN SENSOR MOUNTING RING DETACHED FROM WINDSHIELD Publication Date: November 30, 2009 FORD: 2010 Taurus 2009-2010 Expedition, F-150 LINCOLN: 2009-2010 MKS 2010 MKZ 2009-2010 Navigator 2010 MKT ISSUE:Some 2009-2010 F-150 Platinum, Expedition, Navigator, MKS and 2010 Taurus, MKT and MKZ vehicles equipped with Rain Sensing Windshield Wipers may exhibit a detached rain sensor mounting ring. Mielikki
I will say that Safelite replaced my windshield due to a crack in it. I don't have a rain sensor or anything. They put in an "aftermarket" windshield. It has the exact same markings as the OEM windshield. Carlite, Soundscreen, etc. Identical windshield. So some aftermarket windshields are identical. Geico paid for the replacement but not an OEM one.
akirby
If it says Carlite, Soundscreen, etc. then it is the OEM windshield just without the Ford logo.

Kipperdoodles
So is it my wrong doing for not specifying that I want an OEM replacement, or should they have installed the OEM regardless. I went to the Ford dealership where I bought the car to have the windshield replaced thinking they would be the best place since there was all this technology that can get messed up. Should I notify the insurance company that I am not happy with the outcome of the replacement or should I speak to the dealership solely?
Mielikki
I did neglect to say that it has the Ford logo as well. Would that still be considered "aftermarket" or did I get lucky?
akirby
Sounds like you did get an OEM replacement. Perhaps they didn't reinstall the sensors correctly. I'd have them check it again.
DavisCustoms
PGW is a Teir 1 Manufacturer of Glass for Ford. the Carlite name is appied by the manufacturer of that windshield. your "Carlite windshield" might be made by PGW, LOF, Service or other Glass Manufacturer. "Ford" does not manufacture any glass themselves. With that said, I see 5 possible problems that are causing you rain sensor not to work. 1) They replace the "rain sensor windshield" with a "non-rain sensor windshield" <meaning the windshield that was installed does not have a section of the third visor frit removed to allow the sensor to function. (third visor frit it the dot matrix above your rearview mirror) 2) The rain sensor pad (the gel pad between the sensor and glass) was applied incorrectly resulting in air bubbles present between the pad and the glass, thus sending incorrect signals. <<<<<most common issue 3) the rain sensor was not Calibrated after installation (all glass in manufactured to the same spec on thickness and to ANSI Z-26.1 spec)<<<most common on GM vehicles 4) the tech turned the key or touched the brake during the glass install while the rain sensor was unplugged (thus the car sees an open circuit and will ignore it until it is reset) <<<<<second most common issue 5) the tech actually damaged the sensor during replacement.<<<<uncommon I am a sundries specialist and I deal with these issues on a daily basis. any questions, feel free to IM me
