mustangphil302 Posted July 29, 2016 Share Posted July 29, 2016 (edited) Car - 2011 SE 2.5 Current Mileage - 73,500 Driven Daily ~ 850 miles a week, 95% of which is highway So when I first picked up the car, couple months ago, I changed the oil and filter. I used Mobil 1 5w20, and Motorcraft filter. I have reset oil change interval and since, have driven 7800 miles. As of now, I have "22% OIL LIFE" left. So do you guys change your oil when OIL LIFE is near 0%, or do it sooner. It seems a little excessive to me to go over 8000 miles, even with full synthetic. With the type of driving and the number of miles you put on, a full synthetic is probably a good choice, although not necessary in my opinion. It's cheap insurance for a happy engine, so go with what makes you feel good. I will cash in my dealership free oil change at 3000 on my new Fusion, then because I'm old school when it comes to changing oil, every 7000-8000 miles after that. Motorcraft is a good oil, but I wouldn't say it costs much less than Mobil 1. The difference is $4.91 for a 5 quart jug, between the two, at Walmart. If I change mine 7000-8000 miles, the difference is totally worth it, for me. I go by the IOLM (intelligent oil life monitor). indifferent Posted September 6, 2016 Share Posted September 6, 2016 I usually start telling myself need to change my oil around 6k miles.. usually actually get it done around 8k miles. I provided the oil and filter and a local shop chargers me $20 for the labor. $20 is well worth it to me not to deal with the mess. sirtanon Posted January 28, 2017 Share Posted January 28, 2017 I know for my 2010 Fusion at least, 7,500 miles is considered normal duty, and 5,000 miles is severe. Although I'm in Phoenix, where it gets really hot and dusty, I still consider the driving I do to be standard, so I change my oil every 7,500 miles. .. well, except the most recent one, which I deliberately stretched out farther, since it had Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil in it, with a Fram Ultra filter, which is rated to 15,000 miles. I had planned on going 10,000 miles, but pulled the trigger instead at 9,000 miles, since I had done a lot more short tripping in that time, and it had been almost 9 months. Most of the time, I use some kind of synthetic blend, sometimes one that is right off the shelf, like Valvoline MaxLife, Motorcraft, or Pennzoil Gold, but I've also done my own blend using some conventional "dino" oil, with a couple quarts of straight synthetic mixed in. 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

In typical suburban driving, the ICE-only car will run the ICE 50% more than a hybrid, and depending on trip length and charge use, substantially more than that with the Energi variant. I get the time dimension - contamination from thermal cycling and all that - but looking at the hours run, the ICE-only car will run a lot more than a hybrid for a given number of miles run in typical traffic. One thing I have noticed - the used oil on our Explorer is substantially darker at approximately the same number of miles than my FFH. Noticed the same with our TCH still in the family - the Mobil one is honey-colored while the it's like very dark coffee out of the Explorer. Even though it has a 20% larger oil capacity.... The hybrid IOLM might have different parameters from the non-hybrid. IMO, the owner's manual has kind of a contradiction. Both have the same chart explaining how normal, severe and extreme service impacts oil change intervals. Your vehicle is equipped with an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor that determines when you should change the engine oil based on how your vehicle is used. When I purchased in Las Vegas I was told to adhere to the severe/extreme oil change interval to stay within warranty. Severe is 5000-7500 miles & Extreme is 3000-5000 miles. For a lousy $40 'Works' oil change I'm not risking my warranty because a dealer says I didn't adhere to the schedule. Even the factory extended warranty quotes: "Scheduled Maintenance Services means all scheduled maintenance services at the service intervals listed in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide for the Vehicle, including adherence to the normal or severe duty mileage and time requirements depending on vehicle usage." The owners manual states loosely that if the oil change indicator is broken to have the oil changed every 6 months or 5000 miles, whichever comes first. Gee - the dealer wants you to change your oil more frequently than the mfr actually recommends using the threat of voiding your warranty. That's pretty shady. The manual is clear that you should go by the IOLM not to exceed 1 year or 10K miles to stay in warranty. The IOLM takes into account those severe service parameters.
