Aftermarket Rims and stock TPMS ???????

I bought 17" rims to replace the stock 16" ones then I ordered new tires. I ask the tire shop if they can swap the TPMS sensors and they said probably but the stock wheels may have a specific shape and may not fit the new wheels. ???? Sounds a little strange but without dismantling one of my tires and wheels now how can I know for sure?

they should swap over fine if not its an extra 100 or so for news ones but I don't buy the excuse.

I second the motion. ... The TPMS are interchangeable as long as they keep them in the same tire position they were removed from (LF, RF, LR, RR). Something to do with the way they're programmed with the TPMS Module with a distance parameter.

I just upgraded my 16"s to 18"s ... Walmart and NTB wouldnt do it. Discount Tire wanted me to sign a waiver basically saying that they're not responsible for any damages to the new tires if they rub, because I went from the original width of 215 to a 245 and the label on the driver side door says to only replace with 215's.

I went to a local tire repair guy and he swapped everything out for me (to include the TMPS) and mounted/balanced the old tires all for $100 flat. BTW .... I'm still trying to sell the old tire/wheel package. :)

yeah I am going from 205/60/16s to 245/45/17s. They are exactly the same height and have found no one has had any problems doing so. I was just concerned that maybe the stock wheels had some special shape inside for the TPMS and would not work on aftermarket wheels. Wal-Mart did not say they would not do it so we will see by Wednesday when I plan to go there.

Took Wal-Mart 5 times and 2 new tires to get them balanced right. This morning they said the TPMS sensors were loose inside. Glad they didn't damage them but what kind of idiots work there not to tighten the bands tight enough? Geesh I've spent more time there then at home. They did give me a $20 gift card but WOW for all the hours I spent there????

it's best to take your car to a "tire only" shop if you need the work done right the first time. Nothing against them but Walmart automotive techs are not truly tire experts, so it's always a coin flip whether they're gonna do the job right or not.

This.

I recently bought a 2015 Fusion SE and it has American Racing wheels on it. So, I have no idea if the TPMS were placed on them or not...or can I tell? I don't have any dash indicators lit up. I was wondering if the system just goes dormant when the TPMS sensors are gone. Thanks.

No, it doesn't go "dormant." If there were no TPMS sensors present, the warning would come on.
