shudder/vibrations rear end 2015 Fusion

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My friend has a 2015 Ford Fusion Titanium 2.0 AWD, Nov. 2014 production date. The issue is that during slow sharp turns there is a shudder coming from the rear transaxle. If we disconnect the rear electronically everything is fine, the car runs on FWD and there is only an error message that the AWD is at fault. Is there anyway to check id it's PTU?

There's no rear transaxle in these cars. I believe you meant the rear differential. There was a TSB for 2010 AWD Fusions with these symptoms. Of course, there are some different driveline components in the 2015 vs. the 2010 but the TSB did describe how to test the PTU:

SERVICE PROCEDURE
With the vehicle on a hoist, check the power transfer unit (PTU) by using one or both of the following procedures:
Transmission in Park - driveshaft can be rotated by hand or using a strap wrench.
Park brake set, engine running at idle, transmission in drive, foot off brake - front wheels turn and driveshaft does not.
If one or both of these conditions are present, replace the PTU. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 308-07.

Obviously, these procedures may not apply to a 2015.

Other possible causes are contaminated or incorrect rear diff. lubricant or damaged gears in the r. diff.

Is the U.S 5/60 powertrain warranty in effect in the EU? If so, I'd head for a dealer, assuming that a 2015 has under 60K miles.

How did you disengage the rear differential? It could be either driveshaft or RDU (rear differential). From the symptoms, I would agree it is likely the rear differential. Only way to check is to get it up on a lift and see if fluid is coming out the vent hole or if there is debris in the fluid. That would nail it for sure.

I have asked him to perform the check from the 2010 TSB. From what I was able to gather from the information available, the AWD system operates by selectively disengaging the rear whenever it isn't necessary to save on fuel.

Or more correctly, it selectively engages the rear via an electronic clutch in the rear differential when slip is detected on the front wheels or the system anticipates slip might occur (hard acceleration e.g.).

So i recently took my ford fusion awd  2014 2.0 to my local ford dealer here in ukraine. My ford was makin popping noises when i would make a sharp turn, the people at the dealer ship told me i need to replace my back clutch im assuming its the Viscous Coupler. However when i looked online for the part the only one that shows up is Viscous Coupler - Ford (CV6Z-4A232-A) and when i put in my trim model into the system (ebay, etc,) it says that the part wont fit........ Help please

Hi Kasi.  Does your Fusion look like the Fusion depicted in the photo at the top of this webpage? The Ford vehicle which is called a "Fusion" in Europe is totally different than what we have here in the United States. It is a boxy, four door hatch.

Where did you purchase your Fusion from? The U.S. spec Fusion is not sold in Europe. The counterpart is the Mondeo.

Let us know what you actually have.

the issue is more then likely with the Active torque coupling unit. If you pop the housing on the unit and see fluid then the clutch unit failed.
