nasoj007
I have a 2008 Fusion AWD 3.0L that has an intermittent "whine". Under moderate acceleration I occasionally get a weird humming, whine noise at around 2500-3000 rpm that increases in volume with speed until the car upshifts. It mostly happens when the car is cold and is worse when the weather is cold. I don't feel and vibrations and haven't noticed any physical issues that could account for the noise. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what it would be, I'd like to find any possible major problems before they become major. http://s289.photobucket.com/user/nasoj007/media/20161210_130049_zpsudc0f5qc.mp4.html Edit: Added link to short video. indifferent
Could it be a belt?
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Transmission fluid or PTU fluid not being warm enough could cause gear whine. They take considerably longer than engine coolant to warm up in cold weather, and so the car should be driven rather gingerly the first 10-15 minutes. Idling will NOT help them warm up quicker, but driving will. Does the whine show up in P or N when you step on the throttle? Then it is more likely belt or fuel pump whine as suggested above.

I've always wondered if any parts of the gearing move when in neutral.
nasoj007
I added a video to the original link that you can hear the sound in. It doesn't sound like a belt or fuel pump issue to me, not any that I've encountered before. I'll try the neutral/park thing tomorrow and see if it still does it.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
If anything, it will slow the warmup due to less friction. Puts a little less load on the engine as well vs leaving the trans in Park. Does putting the gear selector in neutral help warm the tranny? I've always wondered if any parts of the gearing move when in neutral.
