campfiretherapy Posted January 21, 2009 Share Posted January 21, 2009 While driving between 1500 and 1700 rpm, a faint vibration/rattle can be heard coming from the top of the dashboard on the driver's side. All loose change, sunglasses, cd's and other cargo is secured. I'm convinced it is something inside the dashboard that needs to be tightened down but I can't figure out what. If there is a simple fix from someone else's suggestion, I'll try that first before I dismantle the dashboard which doesn't sound like much fun. Anyone with a similar problem?? More like 6 to 8 inches behind the instrument cluster, right beneath the top of the dashboard. It is definitely noticeable and it can consistently be heard between the aforementioned rpms. I'm not concerned about anything mechanical, its just annoying considering the car usually cruises within the 1500-1700 rpm range. Cheers Same problem...2006 Fusion purchased Sept 2005. Very minor annoyance when first purchased but lived with it....loud music works wonders. Noise progressively getting worse. Sounds exactly dead center in instrument panel like the plastic cover is resonating. No matter what I touch to locate, can't stop it. Noise most noticeable when gradually accelerating and passing up & down through 1500 rpms. I want to rip the cluster out but can't figure out how to pull it. Then I saw the posted TSB for exact issue that points to the problem being outside the firewall underneath the leaf screen / windshield washer arms. I will attempt to do that first. Still would like to know how to pull the cluster. Thanks C Cluster is relatively easy to remove. First pull with both hands at the bottom of the radio bezel surround. Free up the bottom clips, then the sides, and finally the top. Careful on the top to pull straight out not UP so as to not break the clips. Disconnect the 2 or 3 electrical connectors then place the bezel aside. Two screws on the outer edges of the where the panel you removed just was. Be VERY careful if you then remove the storage bin and connected ducts. It is VERY difficult to get this back into alignment properly. Trust me on that! We are speaking about the same cluster....? I want to remove the entire guage cluster (speed/tach) to see if vibration is coming from that area. I have had the clock / radio / pop-up bin all removed so I could change the Clock bulb that burned out with a LED. Removing that stuff again exposes the screws I need to remove in order to pull the cluster??? I thought it would have come out towards the steering wheel. There are screws undernearth the rubber shield below the clear plastic gauge shield but removing them did nothing to lossen the gauge cluster. Didn't tape as they show in Fig 1 & 2 because the clips holding the metal tubes not as easy to access as shown. What I used was several tie wraps tightening all the lines and also tie-wrapped the steel deflector that shielded the lower portion of the tubes from the back of the engine. Odd thing is that the lines are predominantly on the passenger-side firewall but the sound was dead center coming from the speedometer/tachometer instrument cluster. That may be why a sound was produced on the passenger side and heard from the drivers dash. Nothing strange like that surprises me anymore. Thanks for all the guidance and info.. The dealership was also quite friendly and very considerate. So long annoying vibration! I spent two weeks looking for a rattle on the left side in the dash, then I read a post here on your forum about the sunvisor unsnapping and making noise..........that was it! Hi Barton. :D If the TSB only mentions the V-6, then it currently does not apply to the I-4. Perhaps another TSB may apply to your car, or may be released for it in the future. But a particular TSB only applies to the specific vehicle mentioned in it. So for example, if a TSB states that it applies to "2009 V-6 Fusions built between 10/1/08 and 10/31/08", that is exactly what it means. Keep in mind that a TSB is not a "Recall". Most are simply a sort of "Heads Up" for the Service Staff. It simply tells them that "We have seen this problem in the past, so you can skip a lot of diagnosis time and just quickly fix it by doing this and this". My apologies if you already knew this, but a lot of people confuse "TSB's" with more serious "Recalls". All of that being said, you still should not have to put up with rattles and creaks in a new car, so your best bet would be to bring your car in for Service. Do not just explain the problem to the Service Writer and drop it off. Ask to have a Technician take a ride with you and show him exactly what your concern is. Drive down a bumpy road or do whatever is necessary to have him say"Yes, I hear it". In this way, you will not come back to pick up your car and find out they had it for a day and "Could not replicate the Customer concern". Let us know what you find out. I have a 2010 6 speed manual trans I4 ,,i have had no problems or complaints so far. Car is approaching 900 miles. I would hate to have that noise problem and i hope yours goes away. macster Posted January 10, 2017 Share Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) Hi guys.. I own a 2016 SE model with the same rattle noise coming from inside the cluster.. Does this TSB work for mine? Since mine is still under warranty, should I just take it to the dealer?.. the thing with mine is that you have to drive at least 60-65 mph with the radio off to hear it... it's not loud, but i can definitely hear it. A TSB for a first generation Fusion is never going to apply to a 2016 car.
