MyfirstFord
Ive thumbed through the many oil threads and it looks as though it's been awhile since there has been discussion about oil I know most people have their personal preference when it comes to oil brand, Does anyone use or have used the Mag1 oils? Has it been determined what most people are using for the change interval? the OLM built into the cars diagnostics or the mileage table in the owners manual ? I know the Fusions recommend either a synthetic blend or full synthetic so not really wanting to open up the whole which oil is better debate conventional or synthetic. akirby
I haven't seen or heard any reason not to trust the factory motorcraft synthetic blend and the IOLM interval.
sirtanon
In my 2010 Fusion, I run a 7500 mile oil change interval, pretty much without variation, although my latest one was 9,000 miles on Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. I have run 7500 miles on straight 'top tier' conventional, but most of the time, I run a blend of conventional and synthetic. The car is currently a little over 224,000 miles, and still runs great. Don't overthink it - Buy a decent semi-synthetic and you're good to go.
drolds1
If you notice, the mileage table in the owner's manual gives ranges for when to expect the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message based on the type of service. It's not a hard and fast rule chart. The IOLM determines when you should change your oil based on an algorithm: The Ford IOLM system is not just a simple oil quality sensor, but a software based, algorithm-driven device that takes into account various operating conditions of the engine to determine when the oil needs changing. Certain driving habits can affect the life of the oil, as well as driving conditions such as temperature and driving terrain. Lighter, more moderate driving conditions and temperature will require less frequent oil changes and maintenance, while more severe driving conditions will require more frequent oil changes and maintenance
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
The owner's manual specifies TIME or MILEAGE. Both are important. If you take a lot of short trips, for instance, the TIME specified will become more important, and typically that would qualify for SEVERE SERVICE intervals. Remember that all these numbers were developed for use with oil meeting Ford's minimum specifications. Nowadays, it is pretty easy to get full synthetic oils for just a few dollars more than semisynthetic, if you are buying the oil yourself. If you want to really know how the oil is olding up, grab a sample and send it to a place like Blackstone Labs for analysis. They will give you an idea how long the oil will last in your application.

akirby
I believe the IOLM takes both time and mileage into account.
