daflexxx
Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum and already have an urgent question: We have a 2016 Ford Fusion SE and my wife somehow lost (or misplaced?) her key. Since we don't know whether she lost it somewhere around our house, I was wondering if I really have to go to Ford to reprogram the remaining key to prevent anyone take our car with the lost one? I read online that supposedly it's possible to reprogram a key by somehow eight times turn the ignition on and off. But I'm not sure if that is the right approach for my model and if I can purchase a new fob and program it myself also? Today I went by my Ford dealer and they told me of course only Ford can do it and we would have to buy two new keys which will cost a ridiculous amount of cold cash dollars for the keys and programming ? Now I'm trying to find out if there's any cheaper way to do that... Thankful for any help! ? Milan
akirby
Not exactly true. the dealer will erase the old keys and program your current one so it's the only one that works. But you would need to buy one new key and have it programmed at the same time to get 2. Only the dealer can do that. With 2 good keys you can program a third one by yourself.
daflexxx
Hmm mega bummer because Ford charges around 420 bucks for a key including programming. A bit much for a piece of plastic and a software treat ? Thanks for your reply though Edited February 12, 2017 by daflexxx
propwash
If you decide to let the dealer program a second key for you, you might want to get a third one done as well. My car came with the two remote keys. I bought a regular key (no remote locking or any of the other fancy stuff--just a key), so that if I ever lost either of the others, I would still have two keys in my possession so I could reprogram a replacement key without going through a dealer. Like was mentioned above, if you have at least two working, programmed keys, then you can program more keys yourself. If you only have one key, you need to go through a dealer, or there are a few locksmiths who claim to have the ability do do this as well.
akirby
You can buy the keys off eBay and only pay the dealer to program them. Should be cheaper.
daflexxx
Thanks for the tip but don't they have get cut also? Or did I misunderstand something researching?
akirby
Yes, but any shop can cut them.
Oracle_Ed
Depending on how the remote start was implemented on this model, you might find a key in the bypass module. Usually it was a 'valet' key without the buttons. If you have that, you have the second key that will allow you to program a reasonably priced aftermarket keyfob yourself.
