2010 Ford Fusion Sport

When Ford introduced the Ford Fusion back in 2005, the Blue Oval's midsize sedan was a pleasant surprise. Ford delivered vastly improved quality while also offering impressive driving dynamics, room for five adults and a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines. The Fusion put Ford back into play in the battle for midsize sedan supremacy, and in some ways the agile sedan shined brighter than the Camry and Accord. The Fusion also won respect from Consumer Reports for its high quality, and JD Powers named the Fusion an APEAL winner. For all that is right about the Fusion, though, it has consistently ranked fourth or fifth in the sales battle, losing big to the Altima, Accord, and Camry.

Ford put a lot into the first generation Fusion, and for 2010 the Dearborn, MI-based automaker is taking more big strides. The Fusion has a fresh look, more powertrain combinations, and hybrid offering that can achieve 41 mpg in the city. Ford also introduced the new 2010 Fusion Sport with a 3.5L V6 engine producing 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. We've been waiting patiently for Ford to offer its 3.5L engine in the Fusion, so we happily took the keys to a well-equipped Fusion Sport recently to test it for ourselves. Follow the jump to see how the new Fusion Sport fared during its stay in the Autoblog Garage. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

Calling it "Sport" with automatic being the only transmission...my desire for this car just dropped..

10 years ago the Contour SVT came only with manual tranny, seems like things are reversing :(

That's because very, very few people still want manuals. I like them, too, but I don't want one as a daily driver.

Well, here I am, looking to get a fusion in a few months and I am looking for some help. I had a fully loaded 96 Countour SE which I loved. Made a few modifications including the cold air intake and the conversion to duels using the parts guy on the old contour site. I loved that car, the only time I had a problem was at 106,000 when the water pump went and that took all of about 30 minutes to change out. I sold the car to a neighbor's kid and he drove it for another two years until he kissed a tree avoiding a deer!. After my contour my girlfriend, now wife convinced me to get a 2002 Nissan Altima SE. She has been getting Nissans for twenty years and said that they were the best. Since November 2001 when I picked it up I have continued to disagree with her. I have to say the V6 nissan (also loaded) is unreal in snow, get up and go and room. However, enough is enough. I was lookiing at getting a 2010 fusion SEL or Sport. My preference would be the 3.0 V6 but everything I have seen seems to indicate I have to get AWD to get it the way I want. I really don't need AWD or want to take a hit on the mpg as has been reported on this forum. That leaves me to get a Sport with the moon roof/snyc package. Unfortunately it comes with 18" wheels but that isn't such a big issue.

Not having much experience with the fusion (although I tried to get the old girlfriend, now wife to get one in 07) I am looking for some opinions on the car, the need for an extended service plan etc.

Hi pcsgrp35se. :D The Fusion/Milan/MKZ triplets are excellent mid size sedans with an excellent reliability record. I own a 2007 MKZ and we love it. My neighbor owns a 2007 Fusion SEL and she loves it. And my brother-in-law owns a 2007 Mercury Milan Premier and he loves it. None of us have had any problems at all, and have needed to do nothing other than routine maintenance.

I am not sure why you would need to get an AWD model of the 3.0L to get the car equipped as you like. I would verify that with a Dealer before making a decision. You do know that you can Factory Order your car, correct? Just because you can not find a Fusion equipped as you like on a Dealers lot does not mean that it is not available.

Have you tried to build your desired Fusion on the FordDirect.com website ? If you have not, give it a try. Click on this link: LINK: Forddirect.com Website, then click on "Build Your Vehicle".

Dealers order common equipment mixes and perhaps what you are looking for is a bit more uncommon. I always Factory Order my new cars and will never buy off the lot.

Hope this information helps.

Good luck. :beerchug:

It was a site that gave me that information which I now see was incorrect. I did download the order sheet and now it is a toss up between the sel and the sport. I like the motor and the modified suspension in the sport and also it doesn't have electronic climate control but manual, less things to go wrong. However, my first car was a willow mist green buick gs with black interior and the fusion sel comes in a similar color green. Perhaps I am getting old actually caring about the color of a car but it is something I am considerning. I was thinking about getting a contour svt when they came out but I couldn't justify getting rid of a really great car for the svt. Sort of made my own svt with a new intake and duel exhausts and really good tires.

One other thing I am considering is getting an extended warrantee. Are the ford ones good, expensive?

I am in a similar situation. I am deciding between the sel and Sport (currently have a 2006 SEL). The SEL has a few nice features as standard: Ambient Lighting, Automatic Temp Control, Auto Headlights, Power Pass Seat, and Keypad entry. On the other hand the sport has the improved exterior appearance, the 2-tone leather seats, but most importantly the sport suspension and 3.5L V6. I am leaning towards the Sport (I believe the performance improvements will outweigh the "convienence" features) however wish it was offered in more colors. My thought is once I drive the 3.5L (w/ 6 speed Trans) my decision will be made. Anyway you look at it, it is an impressive lineup...Once the Taurus comes out, I believe Ford will have the best car lineup of any manufacturer.

I hear you. I wonder if it is possible to special order one in a different color. I really don't care about some of the standard equipment in the SEL such as the automatic climiate control, heated and electrical seats, just more things to go wrong. I like it simple, I am still kicking myself in the head for not taking my x-father in law up when he offered me his 1965 mustang (his wife took out the oil pan so it needed a motor rebuild) which was on display at the NY auto show. It was matalic gold, had a wood steering wheel, chrome rims and still had the origional blue streek tires on it! Unfortunately at that time I lived in an apartment so I had no place to work on it.

Hi pcsgrp35se. :D Just to answer your color availability question: The 2010 Fusion Sport is available in Sangria Red, Brilliant Silver, Tuxedo Black and Sport Blue Clearcoat Metallics. Those are the only color choices, whether you Factory Order or purchase from Dealer Inventory.

Hope this information helps.

Good luck. :beerchug:

I bought a new Ford Fusion Sport yesterday. I instantly fell in love with the car. It is Sangria Red Metallic with the Sport Red Leather Buckets. The ride is fantastic. The power is very strong. The Select Shift is a ball to use. This is the car that I have been waiting for.

Heres a few pics I took when we got our first 2010 Sport in to wash at the dealership I part time at. I would trade in my 09 SEL SAP, but I dont want to start my payments all over again at this time. Its a killer ride, though.

edit: Its Tuxedo Black which has a ton of metal in it. Looks great in the sun. The first pic does absolutely no justice.

I feel your pain, I turned down a free 66 Mustang GT body that had been stolen and engine removed. I had no place to keep it while I restored it. The body was just fine. I will always regret not just taking it.

Well, it looks like I am going to pull the trigger sometime this week when I get the time. Dealer has a silver sport with the 402A package (I can live with it) but it has the remote start which is useless since it is in the garage at night. They are giving me a fair price but less then I would sell my car for but that is ok. I do wish that the doors had lighte in them so when you open it, someone driving from behind you can see your opening the door. I dislike the blind spot system I think it is going to be an annoyance specially when I drive in Manhattan or other high traffic areas. I think there is a way to shut it off when you want to do that.

Did you ever end up picking up the Sport? I'm leaning towards it myself, on a Sangria Red with Sport Red leather interior, same 402A package, with a voice-activated nav system and the remote start. I would be coming out of a 1997 Thunderbird Limited Edition if I go ahead with it.

Well, I picked up my silver sport on saturday. I am really impressed with the quality, fit and finish of the car. Sync is turning out to be a blast and I am starting to like all the stuff that comes with teh 402A package. Mine came from the factory with the remot start and I haven't had the need to use it. I only have 200 miles on it, initial gpms were very low and the motor ran very hot. Now that it is starting to break in, it is not as noisy, not as hot and the mpgs have gone up to around 20mpg and that is city type driving (not nyc but not highway). When I had it out on the road, I was getting better mileage. Overall, the car is a blast

Thanks for your thoughts on it, enjoy the Fusion!

I took a test drive today in a 2010 Fusion Sport very similar to the one I want to get, this one didn't have the Sport Red interior, nor the nav system, nor the remote start but it had everything else. Acceleration is impressive but not the same as my V8 Thunderbird which has 151,000 miles on the 4.6L! BUT for a V6 it's damned good and more than expected. Very roomy and I love the gadgets. The A/C blows cold, the Moon & Tune package is great and I really enjoyed myself. For me the bottom line is that it's a bit more than I want to spend, for about $5,000 I can really re-work the V8 engine in my 97 Thunderbird AND get a re-paint of the whole car! But it'll still be a 1997 and not a brand-new 2010 Fusion Sport with the 3.5L 263 hp V6 and all the goodies.

I too owned a Thunderbird that was Indigo blue so I choose the Sport Blue exterior with black on black interior. It's a striking color and a head turner. I had to drive 7 hours to get it because no one had a blue one to trade the local dealer but I got $2,000 off in rebates from the dealer which more than made up the trip. All in was $27,545 with the 402A package and window tint.

Love the ride and I've missed driving a Ford.

tbirdbluz - your car sounds great!

However, even at 72 months, assuming I'd get a full $5000 on that "cash for clunkers" they're kicking around, and with $5,000 down I'd have to pay $320+ per month! Then full coverage insurance on top of that! I'm looking for a $200 ~ $250 car payment. I'd need to put down around $7,000 which I don't have. And that's even with the A-Plan!

I just may have to rebuild the engine in my 97 Tbird and get it re-painted! I'd spend $5,000 tops doing that.

Got my Fusion Sport 401A (Sony audio + moonroof) yesterday (this is my first Ford too). The color is Tuxedo Black Metallic, so the metallic looks really great on the sun (better than plain black finishes). I hope I will be able to provide more info as I drive it more, but meanwhile I really like it. Let me know if somebody has any questions.
