Hi

I just joined forum. I have a 07 Fusion SEL AWD with 11500 miles

I started to get whine from the rear sounded like a wheel bearing whine

I took it to the dealer and was told they are going to replace the

drive shaft. I'm now waiting for a the part and it going to take as long

4 to 6 weeks to get the part

My question is Does anyone know whats going on with these Drive shafts

and is there any harm driveing the car with this Drive shaft problem

Thanks

Hi

I took my car in because it was making the same noise you are talking about. What happened is that the drive shaft support bearings went bad (there are two from what I could tell) and that is what was creating the humming/whine noise. My dealer told me that it is common in the Fusion. It took me exactly 1 month to get my new drive shaft. From what I was told, there is no harm in driving it. It will just be annoying and sound bad. Hopefully I answered your question.

Twice?! Wow. Did they give you any explanation as to why it keeps going out? How many miles do you have? You think they would have recall with as many drive shaft issues there have been... I have only 8500 miles on my Fusion, hopefully the replacement I had will be the only one needed.

Hi bpgasboy, :D You are confusing "common" with widespread. By common, all the Service Department meant is that it is a known problem with a minimal/fractional number of Fusion/Milan/MKZ's. That does not mean that a lot of them have it the problem, just that the Service Departments know about it.

All cars have "common" problems. The number of Fusion/Milan?MKZ's tha exhibit this driveshaft defect in no way amounts to the number necessary to have a "Recall". Defective driveshafts are simply repaired/replaced on an as needed basis.

Hope this explains it more understandably.

Good luck. :beerchug:

I bought my 07 Fusion AWD just over a year ago, great car very happy with it except for this drive shaft issue. I am from Southern Ontario and put approx. 70,000 km on per year approx. 40,000 miles. The car had 19,000 km when I bought it at 30,000 km my first drive shaft was replaced. At 78,000 km 2nd drive shaft was installed. At $ 1,600 for the shaft and hours of labour this is a very serious issue, I was also told there were no drive shafts available and would have to wait 3-4 weeks. I believe this is a major issue with the AWD cars and Ford should step up with a fix then warranty all new drive shafts with extended warranty.

I am going to try to document this to Ford customer service because at this rate I will need a new drive shaft in 4 to 5 months, by then my 100,000 km warranty will be done. If they will not back up this drive shaft and it fails this will be the last Ford I buy. With GM and Chrysler in difficutly we are running out of home grown cars to buy. :banghead:

We bought our '07 Fusion new. At 23,000 miles, it developed the 'whine' mentioned by other forum members. The dealership determined that it was the drive shaft carrier bearing, and replaced the drive shaft. At 30,000 miles, the whine returned. Drive shaft was replaced again. We now have 44,000 miles on the car, and the noise has returned yet again. The dealer has ordered another drive shaft... I'm concerned that this is going to be a chronic problem with the car, and am not anxious to replace the shaft on my dime after my 50,000 mile warranty has expired.

Someone mentioned an updated drive shaft...is there any indication whether this solves the problem?

Thanks.

Thanks. I will take this along when I have my new drive shaft put on. I'd like them to know I've done a bit of homework myself!...

By the way, I have truly enjoyed the car with the exception of this recurring problem!

Good morning. A new member here. I just bought a 06 Fusion off of an insurance fleet with 45,000 miles on the odometer. I have some douglas tires the PO just had installed and they whine really loudly so I cant really tell if I have this bearing problem or not. Did this occur on the 2006 Fusion? Do I have any warranty left that would cover it? I think this car just had the 3 yr/36000 warranty. Thanks in advance for any help. I have learned a lot already. I am new to the Ford product wiht the exception of doing some work on my Moms Taurus.

Hi Kevin. :D Essentially you are asking two questions and the answer to both is no. But first I need to ask, is your Fusion AWD? The TSB is only for AWD models, since FWD models do not even have a rear driveshaft.

Concerning your questions: First, the TSB quoted above does not cover 2006 Fusions. TSB 's cover only the specific models and dates of production mentioned in their text, and this TSB does not include the 2006.

Concerning Warranty coverage: No, with 45,000 miles you would have no Warranty coverage for the TSB (unless you also purchased an appropriate Extended Service Plan). The New Car Bumper to Bumper Warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles and you are unfortunately well over the mileage limit. The vast majority of TSB's are merely informational bulletins for Dealers and their Service Departments. Unfortunately they do not usually extend Warranty Coverage.

I believe that the transferable Powertrain Warranty (5 years/50,000 miles) did not begin until the 2007 models. If that is correct, since you purchased your car used it would not be covered under that transferable Powertrain Warranty.

Again, first let us know whether your Fusion is AWD or FWD. If it is AWD, ask your local Ford Dealer if you have any Powertrain Warranty coverage on your 2006 Fusion.

Hope this information helps.

Good luck. :beerchug:

Thank you for the help. I guess I should have read more carefully. I do not have AWD therefore I dont have a rear driveshaft. DUH! Im not sure why I thought I have this problem unless its because I have the whine that Im sure now is created by these cheapo Walmart tires! . I am forcing myself to stay with these Douglas tires until I wear them out. God help me.

Im a little punchy I guess because it used. Sorry about the confusion and thanks again.

Hi Kevin. :D Not trying to get you worrying over something else, but in addition to the possibility of tire noise, the whine could still be caused by a bad wheel bearing or brake problem.

It is impossible to diagnose over the Internet, so if you believe it is not caused by the tires, a service visit would be in order.

Good luck. :beerchug:

I am new to the formum as well, I have a 07 Lincoln MKZ which is basically the same car as a fusion. I had the exact same problem, now I have a vibration at between 40 and 50 mph. I have taken it to the dealer numerous times to try to get it fixed. I am going to try again. The Vibration drives me up a tree!

Update !

I took my car to the FORD dealer today. After there inspections it was determined that my drive shaft and carrier bearing is bad. They replaced both free of charge under the drive train warranty i guess since i have passed my 3yr / 36.000 warranty by 1.500 miles. Ford took care of the issue and i must say i was extremely pleased !

Not "free of charge" ... your car's 5 years/60,000 miles Powertrain Coverage took care of that.

I just had a drive shaft put in my '07 Milan with 37000 miles. Dealer took it in the day after I called and had it ready in 4 hours. Even though I'm the second owner, it was complelely covered under warrentee.

I just purchased a 2007 AWD SEL Ford Fusion.

I thought that the little vibration that I felt while test driving it was just the tires...

Turns out that it was this particular TSB.

I took it to Ford and they agreed with me.

The driveshaft is going to be replaced next week.

I have a 07 ford fusion AWD SE 62400 miles;

I just had my drive shaft replace for a bad front end carrier bearing .

the drive shafts are not the problem.

the problem is the carrier bearings .

the 07 has 2 carrier bearing one in front and one in back. the drive shaft is in 3 pcs.

ford dose not sell carrier bearings for the cars. you have to by the whole drive shaft. at $750.00 for the drive shaft only.

but they changed the drive shafts. they are now 2 pc. with only 1 carrier bearing.

and the dealer had one in stock on the shelf. sounds like this is a ongoing problem.

I called customer service at 1-800-392-3673 and reported this problem.

anyone with this problem should call and report it.

I'm keeping my invoice in case there is a recall down the road.
