JustinH
Hello, first post here. I gutted my cats and removed the resonator & muffler in the center pipe, left the rear mufflers intact. I'm getting a raspy tone on mild acceleration, and what sounds like an exhaust leak under moderate acceleration through WOT. I double-checked the connections and even used some ultra copper on the flanges and fittings when I put it back together to make sure it's sealed up. Is this just the normal sound for these cars with the cats gutted or do I have something else going on here? I'll try to get video soon. Thanks!!
akirby
Why would you gut the cats?
JustinH
I have no emission testing where I live. I don't need a lecture on this, I've gutted cats on many other cars. This is the first time I've had these sounds after doing so. I'm just looking for an answer to my original question. Thanks...
akirby
I was under the impression that the cats were high flowing and not very restrictive to begin with.
eGuru
I was under the impression that the cats were high flowing and not very restrictive to begin with. The OP is not looking for logic here as he is 'not interested in a lecture'. Another guy who doesn't care about our children's future on the planet.
andyross
Also, don't most cars have a post-cat sensor? Removing the cats could really confuse the computer and cause codes or performance issues?
Monochrome11
Besides, I understand the only benefit (negative) of gutting a cat is reduction in performance because of the expansion and compression of the exhaust gasses while going through it. Yes, modern cats are high flow and do not restrict flow if working properly.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
What you are hearing is typical of the 3.5 if you take the resonator out. May want to put that back in, if not the muffler as well. Dynomax mufflers if available can give a nice sound for these engines.
