robertlane
How much of these sales are due to the damaged cars because of the Hurricanes? Analysts are saying that it was part of the boost.
robertlane
Here's the article that I was looking for: FORD: Hurricane replacements help end skid Replacement demand from Hurricane Harvey helped an already-strong September for Ford Motor Co. as the automaker snapped a three-month sales skid. Ford's sales last month rose 8.9 percent behind strong sales of its F-150 pickups. The automaker's retail sales rose 4.4 percent, while fleet sales jumped 25 percent. Ford's pickup/van sales jumped 21 percent and CUV/SUV sales rose 1.8 percent, while car sales fell 1.3 percent. Sales of Ford's Lincoln luxury brand rose 0.1 percent. "Our September sales were strong across the board -- including retail, commercial and government," Mark LaNeve, Ford's vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service said in a statement. "We're pleased to say recovery in Houston and Florida is moving quickly, with all of our dealers in the area now back up." zip89105
Fleet sales of 52,000 is great, but when that is 23% of sales I don't think that's such a good thing since margins will be lower, and resale of similar vehicles will be watered down.
akirby
Only 10% were daily rentals and those are no longer stripped down models dumped for next to nothing. The majority of fleet sales are to governments and commercial which are very profitable. Most mfrs would kill to have Ford’s fleet business. This is not a problem.
zip89105
Most manufacturers are downsizing their fleet business, leaving it to those willing to take low margins, like Ford. Profitable? Maybe. Very profitable, not at all. But it is one way to dump unsold inventory.
akirby
You don’t think Ford makes a healthy profit on fleet trucks and vans? Some of those sticker for $75K. Don’t confuse government and commercial fleet sales with rental fleet dumping.
BlueOval2010
The ambulance manufacturing company I work for pays over 55k for bare chassis F550 XLT's. We easily go through well over 100 per year. Pretty sure Ford not cutting margins on those!
