So any discounts on the Fusion Hybrid?

My dealer wants me to put down $3,000 to order the car and will not budge on the price.

 

Hi Carnivore. :D High demand and low supply on the Hybrids means no Incentives and not much room for negotiations.

 

Some people seem to have had luck getting Dealers to accept X-Plan Pricing, but just as many have not. If one Dealer will not negotiate, all you can do is try another.

My local dealer did the same w/not budging on price.

 

So I drove 50 miles and got a dealer who ordered the exact FFH I wanted at $1k under MSRP, and was happy to do it.

 

Shop around, shop around, shop around.

 

The dealer that wouldn't budge just got a FFH in for test drives, I can't wait to go waste his time like he wasted mine when I take it for a test drive.

When you get your new one go park the car in front of the dealership and put a sign in the window that says " I got a better deal at xyz dealership."

Then go in and waste his time.

hehe, not a bad idea at all. The dealership I ordered from is River Bend Ford in Bainbridge, GA. I won't name the dealership that wouldn't budge, but you can figure it out if you look at what city I'm in.

 

Anyone in Tallahassee should make the drive to South Georgia and do some shopping around, much better prices to be had.

 

Also, if anyone decides to buy a car from River Bend, let me know. I get a $100 referral fee, and I can give that to you as $100 off the price of your car. (My friend did that for me, so I'll give back to the community :-) )

501A + leather. $1,000 below MSRP on dealer model, with trade.

 

I drove to a large dealership 1 1/2 hours away just for the test drive, but was totally prepared to take my business elsewhere for my order - and made sure they knew it. This was at a large sales event last weekend (end of the month). I guess they were able to make up their profit margin on other units, and they just wanted the sale. Can't say enough about the very professional sales staff and how well we were treated. Still it took the better part of the afternoon to agree on a number.

 

Ditto on "shop around", or at least project a willingness.

 

Happy hypermiling! (42 mpg average commute my first week of ownership).

Very odd behavior for my local dealers. Found one to test at a store about 40 miles away (N. VA locale, there are at least 8 closer dealers). We made an Appt., they had a car prepped and ready for the test. No horseplay about coming with on the drive. We liked the car and wanted to discuss price -- this was on 3-30. No negotiation allowed at all, confirmed by the sales manager. Odd behavior since all customer orders prior to 3-31 would not count against the dealerships allocation -- in effect a free, incremental order. We had been car shopping for 6 months or so, and were getting a bit weary of the drill. Liked the car, dislike OPEC, realized that the premium for the car will never be justified by savings, wanted to buy from an American car company, so we decided to try to buy the Fusion for no more than $1000 more than the equivalently equipped Camry Hybrid (after tax credit).

 

On 3-31 (last day for full tax credit) contacted 5 dealers, including the local Costco and Penfed referral. One dealer wanted MSRP plus $1795 due to demand. One dealer didn't bother responding to two emails. Two dealers offered at MSRP only. Ironically the dealer closest to me accepted my offer of invoice plus $750. I knew they wouldn't budge on the dealer processing fee (359) so I didn't bother to try. Whole ordering process took 30 minutes and a $500 deposit. Seriously, I can't imagine why any dealer would turn dow the deal.

 

I suspect it will be a couple of months till we actually get the car.

On Sat 3/28 went to local dealer and saw 2009 Fusion which I liked. Spoke to my brother-in-law who sells Audis and he found a dealer near him who would sell 2010 Fusion Hybrid for $500 over invoice. Called my dealer and they would not budge without "proof"; I didn't want to put my brother-in-law's contact out so told them I wouldn't drive to another dealer just to get a quote for them. Found another dealer nearby who matched the price. Total cost with 502a package before taxes $30,120; $28,875 + $775 dealer prep + $470 "FDAF Assessment" (whatever that is), with $500 down. With the $3400 tax credit that brings it down under $27,000. Seems like a good deal! :happy feet: Dealer said it would take 8 weeks to get it.

I'm trying to be careful to stay with the flow of traffic and not be obnoxious in the hypermiling, but little things matter, and some days the driving conditions are better than others. I try to leave for my commute a little before rush hour is in full tilt, and some days I find I have the elbow room to kick it into cruise control on the longer freeway stretches - noticeable difference. A warm engine, a little momentum, and coasting when you can seems to be the trick with EV mode. The other day, I was amazed to find I was coasting in EV on an INCLINE. Just sort of figuring it out as I go along. Ahh, the joys of bonding with the new ride. Oh, sound system is sweet - I still need to play around with settings. Needed to find the lights and wipers first! Oh, and I paired my Bluetooth with Sync, much easier than I thought.

Hi WP. :D Considering the facts that it is a high demand, short supply vehicle, you actually got a pretty good price.

 

Just to give you a general idea, The "MSRP" of a Fusion Hybrid with the 502A package is $31,940 (including "Destination Charges"). So you got it for $1,820 below MSRP.

 

Just one or two things. There should be no Dealer Prep Charge. So I have a feeling that $775 is actually the "Destination Charges". However, it should be $725, not $775. Ford only charges $725 for Destination Charges. In the grand scheme of things, small potatoes though.

 

All in all, not a bad deal for a high demand car.

FDAF - the charges the dealership pays into the Ford Division Advertising Fund. Dealers are part of a regional FDAF group and they decide how much money they will put into the fund by vehicle line. Ford usually matches the fund and the dealer group does local advertising and marketing/promotions/discounts from this local/regional fund.

 

The FDAF charge is always included in the dealers cost of the vehicle, but it may vary by region and vehicle line.

 

Atlanta FDAF dealers may be giving a bed liner with pick-up purchases, and Birmingham FDAF dealers might give a $500 discount on Rangers. Their decisions.

 

Another of the reasons you can't go by someone else's experience to compare your vehicle deal and the reason they base your purchase on your registering zip code. Going from Atlanta to Birmingham to buy doesn't qualify you for the extra $500. You only get what your zip code qualifies for.

Yes, you're right about the "Destination Charges". I did the math wrong. The inventory price with the 502a package was $29145 (including $725 destination charges), + $500 "over invoice", + $470 FDAF = $30,115. I got it for $30,120.85 before taxes so an extra $5.85 snuck in there somehow. :huh:

 

I'm basing the invoice price on Edmund's TMV pricing report, which doesn't seem to include FDAF.

Ok so i went through the USAA buying program and they had the price listed at 100 over invoice, but their preferred dealer balked so i went to another deal and showed the proce sheet and they said they would do $500 over invoice which is about 3k under MSRP so im really jacked.

I'll be interested to see what your cost is after FDAF etc. I'd be very surprised if you can save $3000; the difference between MSRP and invoice on my car with the 502a package was $2795. Subtract $500 and you're down to $2295, then $470 for FDAF and you're down to $1825 under MSRP.

My dealer in Los Angeles has an FDAF of $353. The total invoice price of the FFH with 502A in White Platinum is $29934. I got it for invoice through my employer's hybrid purchasing program. I ordered the FFH in late February. It has a VIN and is set for production the week of 4/13. :D

I got my FFH for MSRP, 29k for the 501a, (moon & tune but no nav) The dealer ships around Boston are being really stingy with this car, not one would sell below MSRP before april 1st. I one place I called the sales guy said 38K for full loaded one. I just laughed.

At least I got 2k for my fair condition Honda accord (KBB value at $1600)

I am happy with the deal I got, thought I have allot of dealer ships calling me now! haha Hoping mine will come in next week!

Now, having driven one at the dealer, I am getting concerned that somehow they will take the car I ordered and sell it to someone else at a higher price, or some other shenanigans like that. Is this a possibility? What, if anything, can I do to ensure I get my car? Is my order a contract with the dealer that they can't break?

Of course it's a possibility and no, you can't force the dealer to honor the deal. You can ask for your money back though if they don't produce the vehicle.

I highly doubt they could sell it a higher price with the tax rebate cut in half

Is this a common practice? Doesn't my order provide me any protection against a scam like that?

 

I think Ford would be none too happy as they make the dealer go through the whole verification process in order to avoid this kind of practice. I am pretty sure you would also have grounds to sue them over breach of contract.
