Bret Cummins
I have a 2006 Fusion SEL and lately I've been having trouble using the remote start. Usually, when it does work, I hold down the button and the horn chirps twice and then starts right up. Now that it's winter, it just chirps once and doesn't do anything at all. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the car battery because the car battery is 6-7 years old.
eGuru
The battery might be the cause. It has definitely exceeded its life expectancy. I'm surprised it still starts your car in the northeast weather. I wouldn't suggest any further troubleshooting of the remote start problem until the battery is renewed.
FusionDiffusion
Test the car battery, and also think about replacing the remote fob battery too. My original battery went bad after about 6.5 years. If you are willing to risk a dead battery, you can test it by turning the headlights on and turning the key on (without starting the engine) and leave it like that for 5 minutes. If it doesn't make it the 5 minutes or won't start afterwards, then you know the battery is bad (you will have to charge, jump start, or replace the battery afterwards).
eGuru
Since the remote start is chirping once, the start request is being successfully received - so the RS fob battery is not likely the issue.
