Free Rental Car for Takata recall?

Recommended Posts

I had the unprecedented experience of having to take my loaner into the Hertz garage to get the oil changed. A first for them apparently since we had to wait for the car in their break room during break time.

I noticed the other day my insurance company says you can only have a rental for 30 days, I couldn’t imagine the nightmare of trying to explain why I have a rental for 3 month.

Curious for those who have already had their airbags replaced (like me).  I have an app that tells me what postal mail is being delivered daily.  I see there is a letter from Ford arriving today stating Safety Recall Notice. Wondering if it is just confirmation that my airbag was replaced (which I rec'd from dealer) or if there is another safety recall :(

Quick update on my car:

About 2 weeks ago - I received a text message from an unknown number saying the airbag for my car was delivered to my dealer - and I should schedule the work as soon as possible as I would be charged for my rental if I did not.

Turns out that text was directly from Ford - I must have signed up for text notifications at some point.

I called the dealer - and they said they would look for it.

15 minutes later they called back and said they had it - with my VIN on it.

I scheduled the work for a Monday morning (dropped off Sunday night - via the after hours key drop).

They called me Monday early afternoon to say they were done.

I drove up with the rental - dropped it off - and picked up my car.

It looks like they did a good job - the top of the airbag (on the dash) appears to be a slightly different shade of black.

I'm not sure if it's because it's new - and my black dash has faded over 10 years - but it's not that much of a problem.

Service manager said I was the first one at their dealership to get the replacement done - and probably the longest with a rental.

Had mine replaced late July and haven’t received any letters from Ford.

Thanks - I'll post what it is about when I get home.  The rental worked out great for me since the AC in my car is broken. We have a few more hot days coming up so would welcome another rental, but probably not likely :(

I’m well into my 4th month of rental. Very much enjoying my 2018 Fusion Hybrid! Wife and I take turns based upon who has further to drive that day. We’ve put nearly 10k miles on it! That’s 10k miles not on our other two vehicles.

Ford offered to give me a great trade in value for my current Fusion. Latest offer was $3,000 over KBB trade-in value. Why would I take that? I’m perfectly happy with my old Fusion and I’m not interested in signing up for a new car payment. I’ll tale the free rental for as long as I can, thank you very much!

I haven't been able to get Ford to send me the details on my 2012, but I think it is not one they make you park, and wouldn't get a rental. If it was deadly serious I would want a rental, but apparently for my 2012 it is just unsafe, which I can live with I guess.

We went from the 100+ temps to 3 days of 90s (windows down weather) straight to winter like 70's and 80's, and when I really enjoy driving and working on it, so I am not sure I would want a rental anyways, I am looking at a 50cc scooter to take half of the days I drive to school, and taking back roads that rarely see 35 mph anyways.

My wife and I bought a just-off-lease 2010 Fusion SEL V6 with 20-something thousand miles in late 2011.  We proceeded to rack up the miles for a year or so when it was nearly totalled by an F-150 which came across the entire front clip sideways.  Insurance had the car repaired.....but not very well, since I later had to have the car put onto a frame machine to adjust the front subframe in order to fix the tire wear issue that ensued after the "rebuild."  Fast forward a couple more years.  The miles were continuing to add up...just over 100,000.  By now, the car had endured a couple of run-ins with the local wildlife, but instead of actually replacing the damaged bumper cover, I installed a slightly better one that I sourced from Craigslist.  Sure, a couple of clips don't exactly hold like they should and the trim around the fog lights are missing, but at least it's all intact.  I forgot to mention.....the car is silver.......the bumper cover is black.  That's when is gained the nickname, "Blackbeard." To add insult to the bumper injury, some of the off-brand crash repair parts were looking quite worse for wear, and the hood, decklid, and top had sustained substantial hail damage.  We didn't care that much because we really liked the car.  About that time, we began smelling gas whenever we walked past the car.  We originally thought there was just an issue with the capless filler system, but I was able to get the car on a lift and found gas coming from the top of the fuel tank.  I removed the tank and found a stress crack in one of the bends on top of the tank.  Since the car was already WAY out of warranty, I used some "gas tank repair putty" and "fixed" it.  When the gas smell came back, I did a little online research and found that I was not alone.  I contacted the same dealer where we had purchased the car and was very pleasantly surprised with how helpful the service manager was.  Since it was a safety issue, Ford provided a rental car for us until a replacement tank could be sourced and installed.  Ford (through Enterprise) provided a $30/day rental for us while we waited........and waited.....and waited.  Six months later, we got a call letting us know that our car was ready.  They had even replaced our battery at no cost since our battery had died while waiting at the dealership.  We had put so many miles on that little Focus rental car that we had to have the oil changed a couple of times. That was in 2016.  In June of this year, we got the same notification as everyone else in the affected geographical areas.  I called the dealership closest to me, but had no luck.  I then spent half a day calling different local dealerships and Ford customer service until I finally got to talk with the same service manager at the dealership where we originally purchased the car.  It was around quitting time, but he had secured me a car at an Enterprise down the road from the dealership.  I couldn't go with my wife and kids to get the car so I gave her specific instructions to find out how we could exchange rental cars if they tried to give her a Versa or something similar.  To our surprise, it was a 2018 Cadillac XTS with something like 12,000 miles on it.  Four months have passed.  Our Fusion is languishing in the back yard.......covered in tree sap......dead battery (again).  We've doubled the miles on the Cadillac since we've had it.  It's had its oil changed twice since we've had it.  The last time I spoke with anyone from the dealership, they said that they had no clue when the part would be in. ....."Don't call us, we'll call you."  My wife told me that the paperwork she had to sign at Enterprise shows a charge of $1400/month.  That's nearly $6,000 so far THIS time......add that to the $6,000 they spent on a rental car for us when the tank went bad, and Ford Motor Company has already spent $12,000 in rental fees alone on an 8-year-old well-used car that KBB shows a "fair purchase price" of $6,035 if it was at a used car lot in good condition.  I'm no math-magician, but that seems a bit crazy to me.   I guess I should just shut up and see just how many miles I can put on someone else's new Cadillac.

7 months now with a rental...

Received a text yesterday saying parts had been sent to my dealer and I needed to drop off my car immediately...

But the dealer said the text was erroneously sent to 80 of their customers when they only had parts for 7 vehicles...

Mine was not one of them....

This is very goofy on Ford’s end.  My car was fixed at the end of July.  How is it that they haven’t gotten around to many others?

Frankly, good for you for still having a free rental.  Put the mileage and wear/tear on a rental!

There are a variety of recalls, some (2010?) are the park the car until we get the parts recall that includes the backing plate. My 2012 is not one they "require" to be parked, I am having a hard time just getting details on the recall, since they sent the stuff to the person I bought it from, and they didn't give me the details on it. I think my 2012 is the airbag only and not the mounting plate.

That automated text message to a group of people reminds me of something that happened over the last 2 days at work. A large group of people got an iPhone message push that they need to login and start a severance package worksheet!

After driving a rental since June 1 they called me November 13th that my part is in, just in time to fix it before thanksgiving, except I waited a day to call them since I was on vacation, they couldn’t fit me in until the 29th, which is a bonus since we are driving to see relatives 1/2 way across the state.

Seems like some of the dealers are pretty lax with the rules but others follow them to the letter and beyond.

So with my rental and my wife’s Ford paid out just under $14000, which is more than both of our Milan’s combined.

So, after 6 months and 3 different rental cars, I took my Mercury Milan in yesterday to get its airbag replaced, had a rude awakening when I called to see when it’s was going to be done. It turns out when they scheduled the appointment they said it would “take less than an hour”. It turns out for my 2010 Ford books 6.6 hours to do it, they have to remove the entire dash and steering wheel to do it.

After it was done I had to turn around and take it back as the mechanic put my steering wheel on crooked, but I found out some interesting trivia...in my city of around 80,000, this dealer had 150 people out in rental cars at an average of $45 a day, that is just the Ford and Mercury vehicles for the Lincoln owners Ford is paying $55 a day. When you start thinking about how many people had rentals, the cash they must have spent is staggering.

The service advisor said they are getting boxes of 45-50 airbags a day.

Just got my car back from the dealer last Friday. My car sat 7.5 months in my garage covered (followed manual instructions for long term storage) and I recieved a free rental for the duration acter signing a "No Driving Agreement". They should pay for a rental of any brand under $45/day. When I tire ed it in and they adjusted the dealerships discounted price it came out to a little over $10,000 for the rental. :hysterical3:

I dropped my 2010 off last Friday and they scheduled the work for yesterday (wed) and they told me they were going to have to remove the dash also. They said 4 hours but obviously a lot of work. I drop off the rental, pick up my car and two blocks down the street I have a major rattle coming from the dash... You can imagine the dialog in my car... It went something like... FFFFFFFFFFFF*********************************!!!!!

So I have to call them this morning and see about getting it checked. It sounds like its coming from the center toward the front windshield.

You would think given the amount of work involved and the possibility of leaving something loose, they would take their time at each step and make sure all is tight, all parts are in place before moving on.

oh well...

I have an update. Had my car at the dealer all day. The tech was checking it periodically throughout the day trying to pinpoint the source of the rattle. So far he was not able to find it. They want to have me bring it back when we can schedule some time for them to remove the dash again. He said the tech mentioned that sometimes when cars as old as mine have the dash removed, they can lose some of the original tension on reassembly and things don't fit quite as tight as they were.

Hopefully this doesn't happen to others.

I may remove the glove box and take a look this weekend. The sound seems to be under the storage area on the center of the dash but they didn't have to remove that itself to move the dash back. They only remove the dash partially I think.

Con_Fusion, I’ve followed you for months now.  Sorry that you now have another problem to deal with.  Oddly, it took Ford a while to get to your car!  Mine was done the first week of August.

On a different note, my ‘18 Fusion began giving me false “transmission not in Park” warning in June, before I was notified of my 08 Fusion’s recall.

Ultimaly they had to rip nearly all front end interior parts, including dash.  I was furious thinking the car would for sure develop some rattles. After all a tech isn’t an assembly line worker!  To my surprise the car has no rattles but it did come back to me with a door ding :(

Hope you can pin point the issue without them having to remove the dash again!

Wow! I looked a video online of removing the dash on the 2010-2012 and it's definitely a pain.

An update after my airbag was replaced. Have a rattle in the dash, dealer tech couldn't figure anything out and they asked me to bring it back to remove the dash again.

I removed my glove box and too a look. In literally a few minutes of poking around I think I may have found the problem. There is a hard plastic airduct that goes right by the airbag. Two pieces of ducting come together and it looks like the foam insulation between them is gone allowing them to bump together. It was easy for me to move the piece that goes over to the passenger side cause it to bang the other piece and make noise. Maybe I'll look at a parts diagram and see if there is an actual part that goes there although I don't want to take the dash apart myself to fix it.

Here is a picture of the area I'm talking about, the top two pictures show that duct: loose air duct

I also discovered that they put the far right  passenger side vent in upside down and it wasn't making contact with the duct (bottom picture): disconnected passenger side vent

I think I will look for a way to insert some foam between the two pieces of duct work and see if that resolves the rattle.

After correctly installing the far right passenger side vent so it fit into the air duct, it made that whole piece a lot more stable. It really didn't make any rattling noise after that. I still got some thin weather strip and slipped it in between the two white air duct pieces. It seems quiet so far after test driving it. So it may be good now.
