Take farting then gas leak

My story starts about 6-7 months ago. On some startups, my car would idle erratically and the engine would shut down. When I'd restart it, it would be fine. I took it to the dealer and they could not replicate it so nothing they could do. Just learned to live with it.

A week or so ago, the car started farting, more like buzzing. I stopped the can to locate where the sound was coming from. It was coming from the gas door. Air was trying to escape the tank. Used a pen to open the fuel door and release the pressure and a lot of air came out. Again, it happened pretty irregularly. The past four or five days - nothing.

But yesterday I went to put gas in the tank. When I inserted the nozzle, gas splashed back a little bit (there was a 1/4 tank). Added gas and the pump shut off after a 1/4 tank was added. Went back to work. About an hour later, my son stopped by. We stood by the car and talked for 10-15 minutes. Didn't notice anything. About an hour after that one of my co-workers told me gas was leaking from my car. All my gas leaked out.

We let it sit all night to make sure all the gas is gone, got the ok from the fire department, and now waiting for the tow truck to take it to the dealer.

Hi Andiejo. When you have time, provide more information (model year, engine, trim level, mileage, where the leak was etc.) which may help other forum members experiencing a similar issue.

Let us know what the dealer tells you and good luck.

2013 Ford Fusion Titanium

2.0 Litre DOHC 16V

5 speed automatic

67,000+ miles

The leak was on the driver side rear, about 4-5 inches from the inside of the rear tire.

Are you the original owner?  There was a recall for fuel tank leaks in 2013 Fusions.  This could be your problem.

Recall 13V227000

When I had the initial issue a few months back, the dealership checked and my vehicle was not included in the fuel tank recall.

UPDATE: Gas tank will be removed tomorrow for a looksee. Found a service bulletin that describes the fuel tank noise - SB-10056931-1271.

Is it weird that I want to see my car without the gas tank?

UPDATE 3: They were able to pull back the shield to see where the leak originated from. There is a puncture that appears to have come from the inside of the tank.

Update 4: One of the fuels rods dislodged - so that is what poked a hole in my gas tank. Still no understanding how it happened. New fuel tank has been ordered and should be installed either Monday or Tuesday.

Anyone have a clue how this happened? I am truly curious.

Think I must have misheard this. Getting an update later this morning.

Perhaps a sticking evap purge or vent valve caused an excessive fuel tank vacuum that caused it to partially collapse inward like a crushed can. I'm guessing you meant an internal support rod poked through?

Make sure they check the evap valves or you might crush your new gas tank if the root cause isn't fixed.
