Andiejo
My story starts about 6-7 months ago. On some startups, my car would idle erratically and the engine would shut down. When I'd restart it, it would be fine. I took it to the dealer and they could not replicate it so nothing they could do. Just learned to live with it. A week or so ago, the car started farting, more like buzzing. I stopped the can to locate where the sound was coming from. It was coming from the gas door. Air was trying to escape the tank. Used a pen to open the fuel door and release the pressure and a lot of air came out. Again, it happened pretty irregularly. The past four or five days - nothing. But yesterday I went to put gas in the tank. When I inserted the nozzle, gas splashed back a little bit (there was a 1/4 tank). Added gas and the pump shut off after a 1/4 tank was added. Went back to work. About an hour later, my son stopped by. We stood by the car and talked for 10-15 minutes. Didn't notice anything. About an hour after that one of my co-workers told me gas was leaking from my car. All my gas leaked out. We let it sit all night to make sure all the gas is gone, got the ok from the fire department, and now waiting for the tow truck to take it to the dealer.
akirby
Could be the purge valve.

When you have time, provide more information (model year, engine, trim level, mileage, where the leak was etc.) which may help other forum members experiencing a similar issue. Let us know what the dealer tells you and good luck.

Andiejo
UPDATE: Heard from the service department. the leak is occurring behind the shield that protects the gas tank. Will not be able to see what the problem is until they take the gas tank down.
drolds1
Are you the original owner? There was a recall for fuel tank leaks in 2013 Fusions. This could be your problem. Recall 13V227000

Recall 13V227000 When I had the initial issue a few months back, the dealership checked and my vehicle was not included in the fuel tank recall.

Andiejo
UPDATE: Gas tank will be removed tomorrow for a looksee. Found a service bulletin that describes the fuel tank noise - SB-10056931-1271. Is it weird that I want to see my car without the gas tank? There is a puncture that appears to have come from the inside of the tank.
Andiejo
Update 4: One of the fuels rods dislodged - so that is what poked a hole in my gas tank. Still no understanding how it happened. New fuel tank has been ordered and should be installed either Monday or Tuesday. Anyone have a clue how this happened? I am truly curious.

drolds1
The only fuel rods I know are those in nuclear reactors.
FusionDiffusion
Perhaps a sticking evap purge or vent valve caused an excessive fuel tank vacuum that caused it to partially collapse inward like a crushed can. I'm guessing you meant an internal support rod poked through? Make sure they check the evap valves or you might crush your new gas tank if the root cause isn't fixed.

Andiejo
CORRECTION: There are two rods that hold the fuel pump in place. One of those rods dislodged and that's what caused the puncture in the gas tank. Still no idea how it happened.

Andiejo
Purge valve canister is bad and there is a issue with the hose leading from it. Both are being replaced and extended warranty company is waiving deductible.
Andiejo
Yup. That appears to be the issue.
