price for The Works service

I went in to my local Ford dealer today to get The Works service done (oil change, tire rotation, multi-point inspection) on my 2011 Fusion (non-hybrid). I was surprised when they told me the price for this service was now $59.99. Last year when I got this service done in March 2017, it was $39.99 and there was a $10 rebate offer. as well. They simply told me that prices went up. But 50% over the next year? It seems ridiculous. As I was already at the dealer, I just had to suck this up and go with it.

I called another Ford dealer a little farther away later, and they told me The Works service there was $79.99. I'm not sure if the lady I talked to over the phone quoted me correctly (she did not seem like a service adviser and sounded like someone just booking appointments). But needless to say, I'm shocked that this basic service costs so much now.

How much are other people paying for The Works service? I had thought there was a standard price that Ford sets for their dealers to charge for this service. Can dealers really charge whatever they want for this?

Also, does anyone know when rebates are usually offered for The Works service? In the past 5-6 years, I recall that almost every time I brought in my Fusion to have this service done, there was a $10 rebate offer available. I was waiting this year for a $10 rebate offer to become available, but never saw one advertised at https://owner.ford.com/maintenance/service-coupons-and-offers.html so far this year.

Another thing I noticed is that the "The Works" coupon at https://owner.ford.com/maintenance/service-coupons-and-offers.html doesn't advertise a price anymore. I recall that this coupon used to advertise a $39.99 price (which you didn't really need to use since it was really their regular price). Maybe by not specifying a price, this allows dealers to charge whatever they want now?

I'm probably going to look for an independent service shop to do oil changes/tire rotations on my Fusion in the future. I believe they would only charge around $30 for this. At $40, I was willing to go to the Ford dealer since I thought they would know the car better, but at $60-$80, it's not worth it anymore for me.

Well, Quick Lane which I don't really consider dealer...but yes, I noticed this. My wife got sold the lifetime maintenance on our 2017 Escape. Problem is usually takes 2 months to get it in. So we have to figure out when it will be ready next and plan 2 months ahead, yeah that is great.

My daughters 2015 came due for an oil change, and found that it was 40 (with asterisks!). Couldn't get it into this dealer (due to all their vehicles having lifetime maintenance...), so called around for other Quick Lane service centers. Of course hers takes 6 quarts of oil, so in the end it was 51 bucks. Went back to verify the costs involved and noted than the price had gone up and no more coupon.

But go to quicklane instead of Ford, and find "The Works" and I bet you can still find it for 39.99 or less*. 20 out of 22 Quick Lanes still had it for 39.99 or less in my zipcode and in my daughters.

I do my own oil changes, so it doesn't affect me. For 40 I could have done her car with full synthetic and had change left over, but she was going on a trip, and they rotated tires, got tread depth, check the battery, washed it, etc...so I went for it.

It takes 10x longer to go get an oil change than to do it myself, and personally I find it easier to just do it myself.

Hi dslai. I'm not sure where you are located, but I was at my Lincoln Dealer today and they had signs up advertising "The Works" package for $39.95.

To double check, I just called my local Ford Dealer and asked how much they are charging for "The Works" oil change and and tire rotation package.  The representative told me $39.95 plus tax, with no coupon needed. I think you need to find some other, less greedy Dealers for service.

Good luck.

Yeah, I looked into using Quick Lane before, but the closest one is too far away for me while the Ford dealer is much closer.

I do see that Quick Lane still advertises "The Works" service for $39.95 or less at https://www.quicklane.com/current-specials/oil-change-coupons.html. I cannot believe why a Ford dealer would charge so much more for the same service when Quick Lane is also owned by Ford.

Located in the San Francisco area. Maybe it just costs more here (like all other things)? I don't know if there is regional pricing for "The Works" service?

Hi dslai.  NJ/NY metro area here.  I would think the pricing would be generally comparable.

Without a Ford coupon, pricing is up to the individual Dealerships. However, in my opinion, the price quotes you've received are ridiculous.

Was searching on other Ford dealers within my general regional area (within a 2 hour drive). Another place I called did say that the service was $39.95. Then I found this dealer, https://www.towneford.com/schedule-service/, which has a coupon that advertises it for $69.95. I called this place to confirm the price and they also said it was $69.95. So looks like the price can vary a lot even in the same general area. I always thought before that it was a standard price nationwide that was set by Ford.

No, individual Dealerships can pretty much set their own "The Works" service pricing.  Generally speaking, other than Warranty work, the only pricing set by Ford is the pricing for the Ford corporate coupon specials

It was $39.95 (or less) nationwide.  I do see that they've taken that off the on-line coupon.  My dealer was always $39.95 with or without the coupon. They never charged me for the extra oil needed above 5 quarts either. IDK what it is now.  My MKZ has only had one oil change and that was on the house.   Dealers are independent businesses so I guess they're now free to set their own prices for this service, as they are for all other non-warranty services.

If it's any consolation, the cost of an "A-Service" at an M-B dealership is over $300 and it includes less than "The Works."  Granted, it's full synthetic oil but c'mon!

Here's an advertised "special" from an M-B dealer in the NY metro area:

Quote
Take $40 off Service A
From $279 + Tax

Service A includes the following: (Average market price of $351)

  • Synthetic Motor Oil Replacement
  • Oil Filter Replacement
  • Tire Inflation Check & Correction
  • Brake Component Inspection
  • Reset Maintenance Counter

All Fluid Level Checks & Corrections Are Dependent On Factory-Recommended Service Intervals For Your Vehicle’s Year & Model

Price advertised for Service A. Includes all factory-required components. Please refer to your maintenance booklet for the complete list of factory-required services and details on the specific intervals for your vehicle's year and model. For vehicle MY09 and newer. See dealer for details. Excludes all AMG®, Sprinter, SLS, and SLR models. Not to be combined with any other offer.

EXPIRES: 07/31/2018

Thanks everyone for their comments. Lesson learned for me to be careful how much a dealer could increase prices for this service. Like I said in my first post, I'm probably going to take my business elsewhere for future oil changes on this car.

I go to Jiffy Lube, in and out in an hour or less, and $80 for full synthetic.

Horror stories about Jiffy Lube aside, that price is for an oil change only.  No tire rotation, or any of the other services included in the Ford deal.

I have been going to Firestone for awhile. The latest was $36.58, and I didn't use a coupon, which I forgot about.

Hi andy. Just trying to be sure we are all comparing apples to apples. So as drolds mentioned above, what does that $36.58 include? Is it just an oil and filter change or does it include everything that Ford/Lincoln "The Works" package includes (synthetic blend oil and filter change, check and top other fluids, tire rotation and pressure check, brake system and brake pad wear check, battery check etc.)?

All included services need to be taken into consideration when considering pricing.

My 2010 Sport is at Roush Ford now for oil change, (full synthetic), engine coolant change, and trans oil change. $435 for all. The oil change is $79 which is a little high for my area, but at least I won't have to worry about the knuckleheads at Valvoline stripping out my oil pan plug, or having to take it back so they can finish tightening the oil filter. I usually do my own work, but with 4 vehicles in my family it's getting to be too much. I told my kids they're own there own from now on!

The thing about having more cars, they each need serviced less...but yes, as I get older, the want and will to rotate tires isn't as high as it once was. I don't know how well this car will go up my ramps, it doesn't seem to have that long of a front overhang, so should be fine, that is the only thing holding me back. After 62 oil changes and 10 transmission fluid changes in one of my current cars, I wish we wouldn't have paid for the "courtesy maintenance for life" on the 2017 Escape. It is due for air filter, and I bet they won't replace it per the normal scheduled maintenance schedule, even though it is part of the plan. When it is part of the maintenance for life program, it is only 29.99 (but it does only hold 4.2 quarts of oil).

I just posted pics of my full fluid service gathered items, 24 for 2 gallons of Death-cool coolant, 40 for 5 quarts of transmission fluid (the one needed for the Aisin tranny), 26 for full synthetic oil, 4 for filter, 15 for the PTU lube, 15 for the rear diff fluid, 6 for air filter (18 for cabin air filter, but that is for me, not the car...), so 120 bucks in fluids and filter alone.

My daughter was actually angry with me, because I didn't "equip her with the knowledge on how to take a vehicle in to get the oil changed and a car wash" since I do all that myself. I had to let her know to get and save the writeup from the other things checked, don't pay 150 for a cabin filter, doesn't need a top end carbon cleaning, etc.

I am also done with maintaining other peoples cars...well, I say that, but we'll see. Since I bought my daughter her car, and went with one that should last quite a few years, instead of an already worn out car to get her through college, I still consider it mine and will likely make sure it has a long lifespan.

The way I see it, I can buy a good oil filter for $3-6, 5 quarts of good oil for $15-20, and do the work myself in my driveway, and while I'm under there, get a look at everything myself to see what needs attention.  $18 - $26 ($30 including the extra .5 quart of oil, paper towels, and gloves) and I'm good to go.  Then, every 10k - 12k miles, I take the car to my local Discount Tire and they do the rotation for free, and check the air pressure, etc.. while it's up.  Also, while it's up, they let me walk around and check the brakes and suspension for leaks or damage.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I don't see the need to gripe about the dealership overcharging when I can get it all done for much less by taking a portion of it on myself, and become more familiar with my own car in the process..

I used to feel exactly as you do.  Then I got older.  After 30+ years of doing my own oil changes, the "allure" of having warm oil run up my arm into my arm pit (and occasionally into my hair) kind of faded, as did lying prone on a creeper on my garage floor in the dead of winter.  I'd inevitably spill some oil on the garage floor and have to clean that up.  Then there was the disposal/recycling issue with the used oil.  For the extra few $ of savings, it was no longer worth it to me.  I have established a relationship with the dealer and when I need a favor, I get it.  My service records are on Ford OASIS.  No issues with warranty coverage if documentation is ever needed and if there's ever a screw-up, it's on them, not me.

Just my .02

I get it, and I can appreciate the fact that the work and worry are off your shoulders.  It's good when you have a good relationship with your dealer.  Unfortunately, not everyone can say the same.

At some point in the future, I will probably just leave it all to them, but for now, I enjoy it.  It's good therapy at the end of the week, and I get to save money in the process:happyfeet:

  • 2 years later...

I started this thread a couple years ago, but just wanted to provide an update. I found out my local dealer is now charging $89.99 for The Works service. Not willing to pay that kind of premium for getting service at a Ford dealer. I went with my local Goodyear store to get a synthetic blend oil change and tire rotation, but it still cost about $60 + tax. I guess there's just been a lot of inflation for car service the past couple years.

Hi dslai. Check the Ford Owners website periodically. They often have discount coupons for "The Works Package" for $39.95. Coupons are usually good for at least the current month, and sometimes the quarter or even to end of calendar year. They come and go from month to month.

Availability varies, but if we plan ahead and check the site when we have an oil change coming up, it can be a money saver.  Also, check around with your other local Ford and Lincoln Dealers. They set their own pricing, run their own specials etc. And always ask if they can offer a better price. You would be surprised how often they will lower the price if asked.

EDIT - in addition to the good advice offered below, I forgot to mention to check your individual Dealership websites for their own service specials and coupons.

Good luck.

Mr dslai, where do you live?

Canadian prices are a little higher, because, of course, they quote prices in Canadian Dollars...

The last time I had L.O.F. service done was for my Ranger at a Quick Lane, and they quoted me $39.95 for "The Works," but I told them to just do the oil & filter; the rest of their shenanigans I can do myself. I can't recall the exact invoice, but it was a lot less than $40.

Wow.  My Lincoln dealer only charges $49.95.  I guess it's still better that the "A Service" at M-B, which costs $320 for a C-Class and includes less than The Works.

Do you mean https://owner.ford.com/maintenance/service-coupons-and-offers.html? I've checked that page before but have never seen a stated price for The Works service. Right now for me, on that page, there is a link to https://owner.ford.com/maintenance/service-coupons-and-offers.html?coupon=sr01&offer=the-works-synthetic-blend-oil-change-and-more, which shows no price, but also states "Expires 12/31/2020".

If there are coupons periodically released for $39.95 that are good nationwide, it would be good if anyone who finds out that such a coupon has been released to post the news here.
