Micro SD card not recognized...

Recommended Posts

Hi guys (and gals?),

I discovered a few days ago that I could put my MP3 music on an SD card and play it through my Entertainment system. Cool! I had a 16GB SD card laying around, but it wasn't big enough to hold all my music, so I put what I could on it and it works just fine. So then I remembered that I have a couple of 128GB micro SD cards - with the adapters that allow them to be used in a full-sized SD slot. So I dumped ALL my music onto one of those, plugged it into the SD slot in my console, and the system doesn't recognize it. Has anyone else run into this problem? Does anyone know if there is a fix for it? I could just buy a larger SD card, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

Thanks again for any input!

Check the format of your SD card.  FAT32 or otherwise.  microSD should match.  In a Windows computer,  look at the File System parameter under properties of the device from the My Computer.  Check your owners manual for the system,  should say the desired format.   For my 2010, it was FAT32 for CDs I think.

The big problem there is FAT32 is not capable of handling 128GB of space.  The limit for FAT32 is 32GB.  It may also be that the audio system is simply not capable of addressing a 128GB card.. I know of many systems that are not.

It could also be that the microSD card and/or adapter are presenting a challenge to the reader in the head unit.. although this is less likely.

What brand are the microSD cards/adapters?

If it were me, I'd probably just pick up a good, reliable, non-adapted 32GB SD card like this one.

The microSD card is a brand new Sandisk, and I'll bet you're right about some sort of data handling limitations. In any case, the 16GB that works holds about 80-90% of my music, so doubling the size to 32GB will easily accommodate all of it. I've ordered a new Sandisk off of Ebay for $12.00 including shipping. Done.

Thanks guys for the help!

FAT32 does support more then 32G. It actually supports up to 16T! MS's normal FORMAT will not let you format FAT32 over 32G though. Larger cards may or may not come pre-formatted as FAT32.  If you have Windows and need to reformat, see the info here:

On my 2011, I have a 128G USB flash drive that works fine.

exFAT is different. Plain FAT32 can support huge drives with large cluster and/or sector sizes.

Well, as some of you will know, FAT/FAT32 can actually handle up to 16TB hard drives and up to 2TB are supported in most operating systems. Microsoft has set a 32GB partition size limit for the FAT/FAT32 file system to promote NTFS, which is generally more efficient when working with large partitions.

In truth, this limitation only exists in recent versions of Windows. Moreover, Windows does recognize large hard drives formatted with FAT/FAT32. Finally, you can circumvent the 32GB limit.

exFAT does make FAT a bit more modern, with >4G file sizes and similar, but it also has heavy royalty requirements and limited support. Plain FAT is more open and therefore much more supported.

  • 4 weeks later...

The issue of the car not recognizing my SD card seems to have fixed itself. I've noticed a couple of times that when you first insert a card into the slot, the car doesn't always recognize it right away, so I left it in the slot overnight. After another start or two, the car recognized the card just fine. I have not idea why.  And from what I can tell, there is no size limitation; I did a complete format on that same 128GB micro SD card, then re-wrote all 40+ albums on it and after initially not recognizing it (as described above), it works.

Go figure.....
