bhaut
My 2013 Fusion is having intermittent electrical issues. For no reason it won’t start at times despite no lights left on or doors left open. I’ve had the battery and charging system tested and it is fine. I jump it and then it is good to go with no issues. It happened this morning and then the fuel gauge showed empty. After driving for 5 minutes the gauge went up to 1/4 full and the gas light went off. Recently the wipers have also started “twitching” when driving when the wipers are not even turned on. I seem to have some kind of electrical poltergeist! Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions? Thanks in advanced.
eGuru
What exactly happens when it won't start? Does it crank but not start - just clicking sound - no clicking? When fuel gauge shows empty it is an indication that battery voltage had dropped very low (or total disconnect). How old is the battery? If it is 3 or more years, replace it - regardless of it having passed "the test".
akirby
If I had a dime for every time someone said their battery tested good but it wasn't, I'd be sitting on a big ass pile of dimes. That's a dig at the mechanics not you - they're not testing them the right way. Just replace it and there is a 97% chance that fixes it.
bhaut
Thanks for the quick responses. It just clicks when attempting to start. I was also thinking the battery but it is not consistent and does not coincide with any unintentional battery drain either. Also, I can use a starter to jump it, shut it off right away so there is no opportunity for the battery to charge and it will start up just fine with no issues for months. akirby
If you want to be sure go buy a Solar BA-7 battery tester and check the CCAs. I bet they're half what they should be. Modern vehicles don't behave like older vehicles when the battery is weak. It's not 100% guaranteed but based on your symptoms it's really really really likely. If nothing else you have a fresh battery for the next 3 years and you can rule that out.

When trying to start and you get the clicking, does the dome light and the dashboard lights dim? If so, the battery or its connections are bad. If there is no dimming of the lights, it is a starter issue. You don't state the age of your battery.
