Does the car's memory store DTC codes?

Here's my issue. My "power steering assist fault" error trips multiple times throughout the day and I lose power steering. If I turn the car off and back on, then it usually goes away and my power steering returns. I have a feeling it has something to do with the Power Steering Control Module recall. I have taken it to the dealer twice now and they told me there weren't any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) present. They reprogram the Power Steering Control Module and send me on my way. If they had DTCs present, then they would have to replace the power steering gear assembly.  I don't understand how there aren't any DTCs present if I am losing power steering and receiving the "power steering assist fault" error. I think the dealer is just clearing the codes and reprogramming the module. How would I be able to prove there is a trouble code popping?

No. I bought it used and the warranty has since expired.

The power steering assist fault came back on today and I drove straight to Autozone with no power steering. They plugged in and didn’t receive any codes. How can I have no power steering, the light for it is on and there are no codes present?

Hi cryptoraif.  Not sure what the issue is so can not theorize as to why no DTC is being stored. Unfortunately, the truth is that not every issue causes/stores a DTC. In fact, it can be said that many don't, if not most.

I would recommend that the next time this occurs, drive directly to the nearest Ford or Lincoln Dealer and do not turn off the engine/ignition, so they can see the problem occurring first hand. I know, not much of a help. Hopefully eGuru or one of our more tech minded members will jump back in and be of more help.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Have you checked if it is part of the EPAS recall group, and did they try to get the codes from the PSCM and not just simple OBD-II fault codes from the PCM? I steered (pun intended) towards a Sport since it doesn't have early EPAS, I don't mind it on my 2015 and it isn't really much more to replace the entire rack than the hydraulic system.

[edit]

I reread your original post and likely they are not seeing any codes, or the specific codes from the PSCM, I think many others have just gotten new calibration put on and sent on their way, only to have it re-occur again.
