sah
Hello: Yesterday, while sitting in traffic with my foot on the brake the car stalled, while in drive. The car did start again right away. Earlier in the day I did notice a very momentary vibration two separate times also while at a stop - I did have the heater on.
eGuru
Did you record the fault codes from your OBD2 scan tool?
sah
I have to admit - I have no idea what an OBD2 scan tool is.
eGuru
You can buy an inexpensive blue tooth adapter and use FORScan on Android or iOs tablet to read the error codes - at least one must have been stored when the engine died while the ignition switch was in the Run position. Here is a suggested adapter. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-ScanTool-OBDLink-MX-Bluetooth-OBD2-Automotive-Data-Diagnostic-Software/332893291991?epid=2206801832&hash=item4d81fc85d7:g:FaIAAOSwCWRb9n5~:rk:1:pf:0 It is almost impossible to accurately diagnose an issue like yours without error codes as there are too many potential causes.
sah
Thanks for the info & the link. Is that like the gadget that's been advertised on TV - you plug it into the socket under the dashboard and it gives information on a smartphone? In NYC traffic, it might be a bit difficult to use it. I was thinking about getting one, but most of the stuff advertised for cars on TV turns out to be junk.
eGuru
I don't have any idea about the advertisements on US television, but what you describe is the concept. You can use a smartphone if you don't have a tablet. You can read the stored codes when you are at home - doesn't need to be when you are driving. The item in the link is the most flexible one for Ford as it can read the modules on the MSCan and HSCan bus. Many of the cheaper interfaces will only read the car modules on the HSCan bus.
sah
OK - thanks again. I do have an extended warranty, perhaps the codes will tell me if it's a a warranty issue - I guess as the cars ages more problems will arise.
eGuru
Before you buy anything, have you followed the re-learn procedure in the owner's manual? It is basically - disconnect battery for a few minutes - start and warm up the engine - drive it normally for a few km's. Also, how old is the battery?
sah
No, to the re-learn procedure. I will have to see if I can disconnect the battery. The battery is a Ford 5 year battery, it was installed in Aug. 2017.
