conorswee
I have a 2012 Ford Fusion Sport with FWD. I had 75k and want to change the fluid. How do I know which transmission I have? I believe there are 2 types of trans on the fusion.
sjfishon
My advice is,go to a ford garage.. They will service the trans. To factory spec, there is no ,,better option.

If you have a 2012 Fusion Sport with the 3.5L engine, your car is equipped with the Aisin TF-80 transmission. To verify, there is a transmission code listed on the Manufacturers plate located on the drivers side door sill. You can reference that code in your Owners Manual. Let us know how you make out and good luck.

bangster
It is more commonly known as the Aisin F21 transmission or AWF21 for Fords use of it. Good luck trying to correlate the TR code to anything useful. It isn't in the owners manual. I doubt that any autoparts places will as you for the TR code and say Oh yeah, you need this fluid. Autozone, Oreillys etc get it really wrong, even rockauto doesn't get it 100% correct. The dipstick shows you need T-IV fluid. Ford has a version of it, Toyota does, and there are aftermarket versions as well. You do not need Mercon LV!
bbf2530
Yes, the transmission in first generation Fusions and MKZ's equipped with the 3.5L V-6 (and some other various models/model years) is also known as the Aisin or Aisin AWF-21. Anyone interested can browse here, among many places, for starters: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-ab&q=Aisin+TF-80 And here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWTF-80_SC Correct fluids for all applications are listed in our Owners Manuals. The manual needs to be read to learn how to properly check and fill the fluid levels anyway. Considering there are several different transmissions which our cars can be equipped with, along with differing fluid specifications, I would not leave it up to the counter-person at any auto parts store to give the proper spec. We should go in armed with the correct information, which is in our Owners Manuals. Good luck. Edited January 19, 2019 by bbf2530
conorswee
I wanted to say thank you so much to everyone here! You guys really led me in the right direction. Went ahead and pulled the plug. Currently been dripping for a few hours. I’ve attached a photo of the old and new fluid. The old is dark, but is not burnt, so I think I got it at the right time, although I think I’m gonna start doing a 35,000 miles or 2 years as I do drive mainly highway everywhere and drive about 30,000 miles a year. Once again, thank you all!
bangster
I did mine at 106k miles, as that is when I bought it. It was darkish, but I have not seen T-IV fluid that cherry red before. I looked at the Toyota fluid, and bought the Ford version of it, and it is more of a deep orange color right out of the bottle. I agree with earlier fluid changes than what the scheduled maintenance calls for. I won't drive this car many miles a year so 30/35k is realistic. It is easy, relatively inexpensive thing to do. 2006-2009 V6 (3.0 or 3.5 in the MKZ) have the AWF21. 2010-2012 3.5 (Sport or MKZ) continue having the AWF21 transmission. 2006-2009 i4 had a 5 speed auto, so it was easier to know which fluid to get, but 2010-2012 I4, 3.0 V6. and 3.5 V6 all had a 6 speed auto, but only the 3.5 continued on with the AWF21 (everything else gets the 6F35).

The MKZ (2007-2012) was 3.5L only. This is why I always recommend people check their Owners Manual for the proper information for their particular car, not take the word of anonymous Internet mooks like us or the counter-person at our local auto parts store. Use the wrong fluid because someone on the Internet said it's okay, risk transmission damage. Edited January 20, 2019 by bbf2530
