Change Your PTU Fluid

Ford Tech Makuloco  has come through with another enlightening video for AWD owners.  Ford is apparently backing off from their  "filled for life" approach to the PTU  fluid.  If you've been around here for a while, you know that some owners have changed theirs and what comes out is not pretty.  Do it every 30K.

Had my PTU Fluid changed on my 2017 Sport today (31K Miles) at a local dealership.

Provided my own Valvoline 75W140 full synthetic. They had never done a PTU Oil change.

I had to tell them where the drain and fill plugs were.  There were 4-5 tech standing around

under the lift just so they could see where everything was.

Drain plug had about 1/4 inch of debris on the magnet of the drain plug.  Oil was very black

Refill took about 22 ounces.

Changed PTU fluid in my 2013 today. I have 60k miles and hadn't changed it before. It STANK and was not pretty.  There was a full 1/8 - 1/4 inch of crud on top of the drain bolt. It was an easy job...wish I had known about it 30k miles ago.  Will definitely be changing it regularly.
