2017 platinum noise from wheel well

Recommended Posts

On my 2017 fusion platinum, On my way to work it drives fine no issues (cold in mornings), in the warmer afternoons when i leave for a the first few miles (roads are a little bumpy no pot holes) i hear a noise sounds like its from the front wheel well, the sound is like tiny rocks in my wheel wells or someone tapping on a piece of metal, silly i know but that's what it sounds like. After the first 5 to 10 miles or so the noise stops, after my 30mile commute i enter my neighborhood and i don't hear the noise. Next morning i roll down my windows as i leave the driveway and i don't hear the noise but i do later when i leave my offices parking lot. Am i loosing my mind?? Thanks everyone.

Hi CB. Question: Are you sure there are not tiny rocks on the road for the first 5-10 miles of road leaving your office? Seems like the most logical explanation, considering it only happens there. Maybe the rocks come loose in the warmer afternoon temperatures.  Just guessing.

However, if it is not tiny rocks on the drive from work, Internet guessing/diagnosis is not going to help you much. Is your Fusion still within the 3 year/36,000 mile bumper to Bumper Warranty? You should make an appointment for service and demonstrate the problem to the Service Department personnel.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

bbf2530, you might be partially right, i should have mentioned the roads are pavement, though there is a small parking lot i do park in sometimes with gravel rocks similar to those who use rocks instead of pavement driveways. Yes my fusion is still under the bumper warranty as i have 18,600 miles on the car. There is no shacking or rattling just the noise. I plan on washing the car tomorrow, when i do i will check everything.

Hi CB. The answer to a mystery is most often the simplest explanation, and I think you just diagnosed the issue yourself.  My free and blind Internet diagnosis is... since this only occurs when you are leaving work, your tire treads are picking up pebbles/rocks/gravel in the parking lot and then shedding it in the first few miles of driving. After those first few miles...no more rocks/pebbles/gravel in the tread, no more noise.

Keep us updated and good luck.

A good way to check: As soon as you leave that possible "bad" parking lot, can you pull over into an adjacent parking lot or someplace safe? Then check what the tires look like. It may also be good to check just before entering the lot, after parking at work, and before leaving.

Oh...good to know, with these 19inch continentals A/S tires how long till you needed to replace them ive seen some say around 23000 some say 50,000+.

Hi CB. Tire life depends on driving habits and environment. If you drive hard with a lot of stop and go, fail to check tire pressures regularly, don't keep you car properly aligned etc,  your tire life will be short. If you drive more highway miles and properly maintain your tires and car, your tires will last longer.  What I can tell you from experience with the Factory Michelins on my older 2007 Lincoln MKZ, is that I got 54,000 miles before needing to replace them.

Larger wheels with lower sidewall ratio tires can also have shorter tread life.

Good luck.

Yes. I've found over the years that the tread pattern of A/S tires tends to catch and hold a lot of pebbles.

Over the course of last week, trying some different parking spots and i think you are right, the tires must be collecting lots of little rocks/pebbles and are flinging them back. besides the noise everything is fine, thanks for the help!!
