My instructions on restoring the hybrid EV function on the Ford Fusion Hybrid approaching the 8/9+ years mark.

In cold weather when my two cars is warming up it will go to Full charge, but when driving it usually stays in the middle.  In warm weather they goes into the Hybrid mode quickly.  In the warm weather I average about 38mpg as a mixture and highway and local driving.

Here's a question for you guys; when the battery is at full charge, how many miles will the car go before switching back to the engine? For me, it seems that when it's full (or close to it) it will only drive about 2 miles before it drains its charge, with cruise control set at 45mph, and go back to engine.

Is this normal?

Yes, completely normal...2mi is outside of range on ev unless perfectly flat or slight downward grade.

Once again, it’s not designed to stay in EV mode for extended periods nor should you try to force it.  The system knows how best to utilize the battery power and sometimes the ICE is better.  Just drive it.

The theory behind hybrids is to only run the ICE when there is significant demand. Acceleration, higher speed, Cat converter warm up, cabin warm up, hills, etc. At about 30 mph on level roads it will go about 1/2 mile in EV and then about 1/2 mile on ICE.

So happy to have found this fix and breathed life into our 12 year old 2010 Fusion battery which looked charged but was never in use anymore. I was in the process of trying to find a source for a replacement battery when I came upon this suggestion and figured it was worth the try for $25. Thank you Allen!

The procedure only works for 2010 to to 2012 Ford hybrids. These cars were not properly programmed to maintain the hybrid functionality after nine years.

I'm not sure if you'll see this but I was reading on this thread and while I was successful in changing the year of the hybrid battery to year 1, per the OP's original steps. However, and what I've noticed is not everyone is following the steps for rebalancing, which I came to realize is an expensive step unless you or someone you know owns a scanner tool like the Autel. So luckily I had a friend that had an Autel, and I tried to go to the rebalance section, and it gave me "rmode - unknown state." Then it'll say that the reason it wasn't able to run the rebalance was either 1. hybrid battery temp range needed to be 15 to 49 Celsius (mine was at 32, so that wasn't the issue), fault detected (which the reason I think its failing from a fault is my airbag light is on and I need to take care of the recall, pending doing that to see if that helps). That being said, I'll update my post if the airbag recall fix will make a difference. Otherwise, if you have any additional advice on what I can do different, I couldn't think of any other way to engage the rebalance.

You don't need to balance the HVB manually, the car does it automatically periodically. You can tell when it's doing this by the EV mode being inhibited for about 20 minutes, the ICE running continuously and the HVB charging to max. When it's finished it reverts to normal operation. If you go into reverse during this procedure it is cancelled and will probably do it over. Most who have done the software update say re-balancing occurs sometime after.

the rebalance done by the autel ms808 takes about 45 minutes and has to be done between the temps of 60F and 102F.  if during the test the battery temp monitor reads temps outside these numbers, the test will stop.  As Loder said, the vehicle will periodically do this on it's own although it is infrequent and I suspect unless the vehicle is driven in excess of 45 minutes it will not complete.  the scanner itself is about $200 so it is not crazy expensive.  I use it for most newer cars as it does some two way communication and really scans virtually all modules and does some things that less expensive units won't do.

 

  I did the 'Allen' fix (he should forever get credit for this) about 2 years ago, and recently replaced the throttle body and S1B1 O2 sensor so I did the rebalance to complete the 'tune-up' and have been hovering around 38 MPG since.  I'm now at 122,000 on my 2010 hybrid, and it doesn't leak a drop of fluid, runs great and I will drive it until the wheels fall off.

I've done the Allen fix as well. I remember in the past the car doing the rebalancing itself but it's been over a year now for me and the car hasn't rebalanced at all I think as of right now my MPG average is 30.3, which is actually worse than when I did the fix. Before the fix I was getting about 32/ 33 MPG. After the fix my MPG went up maybe a couple and now it's really down. So I'm guessing I need to have a rebalance?

These numbers, in the 30s are very surprising to me. My 2010 hybrid dropped to the mid-30s BEFORE I applied the fix about 2 years ago then jumped to low 40s for the almost 75k miles I drove following the fix.

I did the fix on my two vehicles about 18 months ago.  During the summer I get about 38mpg and less in the winter months which is what I was getting when the original programming was working.  For the time before I discovered the fix my mileage was in the low 30s.

we bought ours used in 2017 at around 90,000 miles.  it was getting around 35-36 then, until 2019 when the computer decided to negate battery participation-allen's fix applied and it's in the high 30's most of the time, not bad for an 11 year old 3700 lb.car with 122m on the clock.we just drive, we generally do not hyper-mile.  occasionally see tanks close to 40.  great car.

My car had 250K+ miles on it BEFORE I tweaked it. It was getting fuel efficiency in the 40s when I traded it in with 380K miles. I don’t hypermile but I am mindful. Maybe that’s the difference.
