Carlos
I recently took my car in to the ford dealership because it was misfiring and I had a p0087 code. Turned out the HPFP was bad so paid to have it replaced. The cam follower was worn thru(pump was replaced nonetheless with a new tappet( cam follower). The service rep said there was a bunch of sludge in the engine and he couldnt tell why since the car is in for maintenance every 5k miles. Car worked fine after HPFP and tappet replacement. One week passed by and the issue reoccured. Took the car back and they said the tappet was worn thru again so they replaced it at no cost. Its been a week and I have the p0087 code again and the misfire. I pulled the pump out myself this morning and the tappet has worn thru again. What is going on? Lack of lubrication or what? Any ideas on what I need to do to fix this. Can the cover for the small cam that actuated the HPFP be removed to inspect the area for a plugged up passage that might be restricting oil flow? I attached pics from the first time I took it in. Edited July 3, 2019 by Carlos Spelling
Poil27
you need to get rid of the sludge . the strainer for the oil pump is clogged and starves the engine of oil . you gonna need to remove the oil pan , clean the strainer and oil pan . if you don't get rid of the sludge you'll only continue to have problem like this .

Is the strainer replaceable? And is there anything else recommended as far as cleaning the actual cam assembly that actuated the HPFP?
Poil27
the strainer is avalable from ford (i don't have the part number ) you may need to do a full engine rebuild to get rid of the sludge in all the nook and crany . it may show damage on other parts like journal bearings etc. this kind of sluge can be traced too a couple of problems like late oil change on incompatible rubber hose (not oil rated )
Carlos
UPDATE- removed the valve covers and cleaned all of the sludge from both cams( was not as bad as I thought out would.) Replaced the screen at oil pan and then installed a new cam follower. Car ran great for about 1000 miles and popped the p0087 code again. Took HPFP off and cam follower has gone bad again. How is this tappet/follower being lubricated? Could it be that camshaft lobe is causing the damage? The lobe is rounder than the rest of the lobes for the valves. Any suggestions? Thinking about taking it to the shop to replace the camshaft. Any ideas on pays and labor cost? 2014 ecoboost with 1.5 engine. 3 of 7
The cam lobe was originally ground on a bit of an angle that allows it to turn the lifter in the bore to prevent this. When the lobe wears flat it no longer turns the lifter and this happens... You need a cam unfortunately.
Alondra
Hello this same thing is happening to my husband he has changed the item like 4 times and it keeps wearing off and breaking Did you solve youre problem after all? WKelley
YOu're going to struggle to find parts like that, Ford has already obsoleted the 3.0 for the most part. I would first call a few dealers and see if they have parts otherwise used is going to be the only option.

Ford does not make the repair kit anymore & nothing aftermarket.
