2017 Fusion se 1.5 ecoboost performance chip

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to throw some info out here. I recently decided to take a chance and order a OBD performance chip. Only reason i did was 100 percent refund if not satisfied. The claim was 60HP 40Torq and 5MPG increase. Im averaging 3MPG increase i dont have a way to tell exact hp and torque without paying a tuner to put it on a Dino but ive been driving my car for 18 months so i know how it performs. It has made my car a lot more fun to drive. Its not going to rip your head off when you mash the throttle but it for sure made a diffrence! throttle response is also better. Anyway i got it from chip your car and have had it for a month with no issues.

So, my questions for you are:

1) do you think it's worth it?

2) do you think there are any long term issues that might F*** up the car by using it?

3) How easy is it to install? (I've never chipped anything before)

I just got my 2014 and really enjoy driving it already, but it's a little more sluggish than I thought it would be. So this would definitely be a plus if it's working like you're saying it does.

I can't really say about long term issues I've had mine installed for 30 days and no problems yet. I think for the money it was worth the driving enjoyment to me. As far as installing it was extremely simple! After I installed I had questions about the shift points so I got online and clicked on the chat button and in a matter of seconds I was talking to a rep who answered my question. If it helps they have a 30 day money back garauntee if you are not happy with the chip return it and get your money back. Hope that helps!

Hi gang.  For those interested in "chips" and other performance enhancers on the market, please consider this: Ford, and all automakers, spend tens of millions of dollars each (and more) trying to engineer the best fuel economy from our cars. If simply popping a "chip" in would increase MPG's by 2-3-4 gallons, don't you think they would do it themselves, or simply copy the programming into the PCM in the first place, instead of spending boat loads of money? If something sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.

Spend your money wisely and good luck.

Without enough information on this "chip" I reserve judgement.

Is it one of those cheap things that just fools the system with an altered air flow or temp? Way too many of those around and too many buying them and getting magical results.

Is it something that actually reprograms the PCM with new calibrations? My Fusion is my first vehicle in awhile that I didn't have a performance chip or programmer (yet!).

Only time I have had a good program that did it all I had to run premium to get the better mileage (and to get the most out of the performance changes as well). I think that an individual, that has spent time with your specific car on a dyno and a known set of modifications, can tailor a car to your specific needs. Higher flowing injectors, bigger MAF and throttle body, better flowing intake, different heat range spark plugs (allowing more timing), and a tune to match can really wake up a car, and change driving dynamics to closer suite a driver.

Ford goes for fuel mileage, comfort, and for the normal driver. I don't need invisible shifts, slow throttle tip in, shifts at low RPMs, slow down shifts, safe timing, etc.

I don't care that my car spins the tires at the 1-2 and 2-3 shift, or locks up the tires when I disable OD, locks the TC sooner and keeps it locked at some shifts.

honestly wanted to dyno tune my car until the $$ came into play. Unfortunately I am a single dad so money is usually a bit tight. I'm not real savvy when it comes to computers and how they change all the parameters. I do know they explained to me that this OBD tuner does communicate with the ecm and over a period of miles does change certain parameters with in to achieve more power better throttle response and so on. I'm not here to try and convince anyone that this chip is some miracle worker. I simply wanted to let everyone know I was having good results with this chip. I fully stated that it won't give your car neck snapping power but if you want a little more for a better driving experience it might be a option.

If that is the case then why are we able to go to a experienced tuner that can do the same thing. They are able to access the cars computer and fine tune it to produce more HP fuel economy reduce throttle lag. They fine tune these parameters to you. The OBD tuners all have the parameters set so they may or may not be what you want so when the offer to try it and return it for full refund with in thirty days what's the harm? Your basically saying it doesn't work I have nothing to gain from this post and I can say it does work.

Hi MyFusion. You and I are faceless Internet voices. So I would encourage anyone to check expert sources. Not us. And I truly mean no offense, although unfortunately, I know how these types of discussions often quickly devolve. I hope that does not happen here.

I am on quite a few Lincoln MKZ, Ford Fusion and Ford websites, have quite a few years of experience, and the number of people who have "chip" and/or tune issues (they are two very different things) is relatively large.  Some eventually go back to stock and sell the "chip" or tuner to the next lucky owner, some stick by the "chip"/tune and put up with the issues.  And some feel they have no issues and swear by their purchase.

As far as you comparing "chips" to custom tuning: A "chip"' and custom tuning are two very different propositions. And I was not even addressing performance concerns and had limited my discussion to increased MPG concerns.  A legitimate 3 MPG increase would mean an increase in MPG's of well over 10% for our various models, according to engine. That would be a "miracle worker", to borrow your phrase.

But speaking of performance:  Performance is mainly "improved" by changing the throttle mapping, which is easy to do with the fly- by-wire throttle systems in our cars. They remap the throttle response to give the impression of more power by applying more throttle in the first inch or so of throttle travel.  Makes the car feel jumpier and more powerful, but is mainly an illusion. Overall engine power is largely unaffected. Or the tunes run the engine leaner, giving slightly more power but increasing the chances of engine overheating and other engine problems due to a lean issue.

That is why a tune is so expensive, while "chips" are cheap.  You get what you pay for.  "Chips" are an outdated technology which are not valid on currently manufactured vehicles. And absolutely no offense intended, but some people believe smoking does not cause cancer, drinking bleach can cure diseases, eating all cabbage is a valid diet, the world is flat etc etc, so I would advise everyone against taking the word of anonymous Internet sources, no matter who they are, what they may feel works or not, etc.  And that includes me.  No one should just take my word for anything either.

To verify what you and I are saying versus what is correct, anyone can check with the experts (who don't sell these things) and see what they say.  A "chip" can not increase MPG's by 3 mpg (>10%) in a properly running vehicle. Again, if it was that easy, Ford and other manufacturers would use the same tuning. They don't spend tens of millions of dollars for design and engineering to squeeze out tenths of a mile per gallon increase just for the fun of it, if the tuning in a $50 chip could be adapted to do the same.

Chips, like tunes, will also lead to Warranty issues for those who have any sort of engine or powertrain problems later. It is part of the reason the chip and tune manufacturers cleverly hide a disclaimer in their warranty fine print, usually stating something to the effect of "for off-road use only", or some other legalese. In addition, changing the factory tuning for on-road use is illegal in the U.S., which is why Auto manufactures must go through rigorous endurance and EPA testing.

Again, anyone interested should research expert sources, not take your word for it, or mine. I am willing to tell everyone here to do the research and not to take my word for it.  At the very least, you should also be willing to tell everyone to do the research and not just take your word for it. Seems fair.

Good luck.

There will be no desolving of discussions here. I'm here to learn also. Unfortunately I was mistaken on how these chips worked. I honestly believed that they had a basic program that changed certain things much like a tuner but just unable to change them as a human tuner would be able to do. You are right I honestly never meant for anyone to just take my word. I seem to always ask questions on here and just wanted to offer some info that I thought might be helpful. I do appreciate the info that you have given me and I hope at anytime you didn't feel like I was trying to be obnoxious I honestly felt what I had learned from a few people I know was to correct and I'm glad that I did comment cause the only way to learn is to make mistakes. Thank you

Hi Myfusion. Oh no...all is well! I was also only trying to provide information and was hoping you were not getting mad at me.

We are all here to learn and help each other when we can. Thank you for understanding.  Good luck. ?
