Compass Malfunction

I have a 2010 Ford Fusion SE. My compass is located on the same display as the radio screen in the bottom left. Three days ago, the compass stopped displaying which direction the vehicle is facing and instead show two dashes (like this - -). Radio system works just fine. I do have Sirius XM, no active subscription though so I do not use it and did not check it. Is this something that I can fix/reset myself and if so, how do I do that?

Being it's as old as it is, it could have just come loose...

One thing to try, Factory Reset , it just get rid of settings, so you might have to reprogram your radio stations, add your phone...

Or see if you get any XM station if not, then it's loose...

If it's loose, you'll then need to either tear it apart, or pay a place to ...  ?

Hi Hyvas.  Have you tried the compass recalibration instructions listed in your Owners Manual on pages 75-76? If not, then try that recalibration procedure. Read them carefully.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I have attempted for the past hour to do a calibration of the compass. The vehicle owner manual says to press 7 & 9 simultaneously for 5 seconds and it should change to Zone XX, but nothing happens.

I also did a master reset for Sync but that changed nothing.

The compass sensor is in the auto dimming mirror. Check the connections to the mirror. See if the mirror is still "alive" by testing the dimming function.

My vehicle does not have an auto dimming rear view mirror. The only wiring that goes into this mirror is for the microphone which detects your voice to communicate with Sync and for phone calls.

I am surprised that a vehicle with Sync wasn't equipped with an auto dimming rear view mirror. My 2010 Taurus had the dimming mirror with the compass electronics. The compass didn't display in the mirror - just in the screen. Well - learned something today.

The array of rear view mirrors for gen 1.5 is:

  1. dimming (no mic)
  2. dimming w/mic
  3. camera (no mic)
  4. camera w/mic
  5. manual day/night

To me it seems like you need dimming mirror to get compass.

https://www.ford.com/services/assets/Brochure?make=Ford&model=Fusion&year=2010

  • S has manual mirror (no mention of compass)
  • SE has manual mirror (no mention of compass)
  • SE with 201a or 202a has mirror with dimming and compass (and if camera but not nav...camera)
  • SEL has mirror with dimming and compass (and if camera but not nav...camera)
  • Sport has mirror with dimming and compass (and if camera but not nav...camera)

201a is Sync

202a is Sun and Sync

The wires to the mirror for compass are Blue/Gray and Gray/Blue.

Hi Hyvas.  Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but did you hold the 7 and 9 buttons only to a count of five or so before releasing, or did you hold it for longer, maybe 10 full seconds or more? If you only held the 7 and 9 buttons to a count of five and let go, try holding them longer.  Trust me, the solution has sometimes been as simple as that in the past.

Sometimes in cases like this, people simply do not hold the buttons long enough. Might not be the case here, but try holding the buttons longer, if you think you may have released too quick.

Concerning your rear view mirror...are you saying your mirror has a manual dimming tab on the bottom?

Just trying to ponder through a solution for this.

I thought I had already selected my zone since the car came from another zone, but this had me try it, and it was off (originally set to 8, I am in 5, and set it before taking the video below)

  • If you want to select the zone press and hold the buttons until it says zone down the side and shows a zone (1-15) around 5 seconds, then release before 10 seconds
  • if you want to calibrate (I went into that mode, but didn't do the driving part, past my bedtime...) then wait until it says cal then do the driving circles thing.

Selecting zone:

Selecting to calibrate it.

I wouldn’t need to get a new rear view mirror to get compass, I already have compass. The one I have has no dimming (neither auto or manual) and two silver mesh squares for microphones. My Fusion SE has 202a package. As the image shows above the compass is in the center console.

It is not a silly question at all. To ensure that I was holding the buttons (7 & 9) down for the proper amount of time, I held them for approximately 10 seconds every time I tried. I even tried other combinations (for example 5 & 7, 3 & 5) of buttons to see if that did anything.

As far as I know, my rear view mirror does not have dimming whatsoever. It is just plain old rear view mirror, no automatic/manual dimming.

Key in On and not Accessory right? I had mine running because I don't like being in On at night with the headlights on for long.

I tried doing this in accessory mode as well as while the vehicle was running. My wife also tried pressing the buttons while I was driving. My manual does not indicate that a “cal” sign will show up, instead “zone xx” will and that I will be able to select the zone, and I will not have to drive in circles to calibrate the compass.

That is the electrochroamatic auto dimming rear view mirror. I thought those sensors at the bottom were for dimming, and the mic was on top (mine on my 2012 doesn't have those at the bottom, or anything on top, just a forward facing light sensor, not sure how it all works). You don't have the mic in the ceiling right?

I think you will find in your manual the next page has details on calibrating it, not just for picking the zone. Not sure why it isn't working for you.

Yea, I don't see the little flip thing on the bottom... your mirror probably turns a blueish at night, UNLESS, you tinted your windows... then it will not turn at all... my 2012 SEL v6 had that and never did because I tinted the rear

Yup, this car has the lightest tint of all that I have owned, but is pretty dark, and mine never dim, or need to.

I just tried fooling it by covering the front sensor and using a flashlight but I never saw it dim, I could this on my Grand Marquis it has an obvious sensor on the bottom of the mirror.

Hi Hvyas. As others have now mentioned, the photo shows that your Fusion is equipped with the autodimming mirror.

Still does not solve your compass problem, but at least now you know which mirror your have.

I had mentioned in my earlier post that you can test the dimming function to see if the mirror (and associated compass)  electronics were "alive". Shining a flashlight into the rear facing sensor will dim the mirror. You may just be suffering from a connector problem (usually at the mirror).

Hi eGuru.  Yes, I did see that and assumed Hvyas had already followed your advice.

Just for fun I decided to disconnect the connector to my mirror (which is auto dimming) and see what the display has, and if I could get into either ZONE or CAL.

With it disconnected, I get the 2 lines instead of direction. Pressing and holding the buttons doesn't put me in either mode.

So as mentioned before, need to check the overall connection to the mirror, and if dimming works (I fail to see mine dim, maybe it is subtle or I am missing something). Does the Mic work (can you be in SYNC mode, press the button, and do a command)? Is the mic on the mirror or the ceiling?

Car is a mess, dusty, had to disable bluetooth to take video and didn't shut off radio first, but still, not a YouTube/Snapchat star but here is a video of it with the mirror disconnected and experiencing the same thing the OP is...

Mic is in the ceiling on 2012's IDK if it is different in the OP's 2010 - I suspect it is in the ceiling also.

Early 2010 had it in the mirror (I posted asking about that and found the information about the mid year change), I don't think the 2 spots under the mirror are the mic but the mic is on top, but my dimming mirror doesn't have the rear facing sensors, so not sure.

Just trying to see what might or might not be working from the mirror, and what is all on the mirror, as the image of his mirror doesn't show the top...and a little curious as well :)

  • 2 years later...

I recently noticed my compass stuck on E (2010 Fusion SEL). Sometimes it changes to N and sticks. Just briefly yesterday it worked properly (started car and drove around the block). But within a few minutes it returned to E and stayed there. I tried the instructions in the manual, hold 7 and 9 down for 10+ seconds and wait for radio display to show CAL, and it never changes no matter how long I wait. Don't know whether it's the sensor in the mirror or an issue with the radio console. Anyone have any ideas?

  • 1 year later...

Just started to have a problem with my 2010 Fusion Hybrid.

Compass will stay STUCK in a given direction. Usually it's north. When I first start the car it will give a quick little "cal" / calibration note and then either show "N" and be stuck there, or it will show the correct direction and operate as normal for a few minutes before eventually getting stuck again and at that point it could be stuck on any direction N/S/E/W.

A few points on my end though..... I did remove the factory radio and replace it with an aftermarket radio maybe 3 years ago. The compass worked fine up until the last week or so, so the radio replacement had nothing to do with the problem. However, that recalibrating by holding down buttons on the factory radio thing is impossible for me. To the previous poster above me, I'm dealing with an identical symptom as you and I'm using an aftermarket radio. So I don't think your radio has anything to do with it.

I'm heavily leaning towards the compass itself. That requires full blown rearview mirror replacement though, or am I wrong about that??
