I'm just reposting this ... This is only for Sync 3 units that have NAV!!!

========================

Official Sync 3 Map Updates are Live!

https://syncnavigation.com/ford/

Some vehicles, based on model year, are no charge while many existing vehicles have a map upgrade fee. You can chose to download to USB yourself or have Ford mail you a USB update.

You need your vehicle VIN and Sync 3 ESN to request an update.

If you did a Sync 3 Conversion, you need the VIN of the vehicle that the APIM came from, not your own VIN.

true, I don't know who ALOM.com is , like I said, I'm just reposting this ... ?

So I guess i'll say , Use at Your Own Risk.

I already have the 118 maps and 3.4 of Sync , so I'm good.  ?

H Multitask. Just checked, and if you go through the Lincoln Owners website for NAV updates, you are directed through links to the Lincoln version of the ALOM Technologies Corporation website. So it seems that link is legitimate and ALOM Technologies is the NAV map vendor.

Hope this helps.

Good to know... I didn't see it on the owner.ford.com site right away... not till you do a search for 'map update' then you see the links.. eventually it goes there...

Hi Multitask.  Yes, it also took me a minute or two of searching on the Lincoln Owners website, to finally find the correct links to click on for NAV updates. They have not made it clear or easy to find.

Hi gang.  Just to add some information from my own ongoing experience:

The Lincoln version of the SYNC 3 NAV maps update can be obtained here: https://syncnavigation.com/lincoln/home/

I am updating my 2018 MKZ through the Lincoln NAV update equivalent of the Ford NAV update site which Multitask linked to above. Once I input my vehicle information, the site states the NAV map update is no charge for 2018-2019 vehicles, if you download the files yourself onto your computer and create your own USB drive to perform the NAV update. Or you can opt to have them mail you a USB drive containing the files, for a $40 fee. I opted to download for free. It seems there is a $109 fee for 2017 vehicles to download, and $149 to have Ford or Lincoln mail a USB update drive.

It is a large file, >13Gb so it is downloading onto my computer as I write this. After that, you unzip and transfer the files to a USB drive in a manner similar to a regular SYNC update, for those who are familiar with that process. You also download and transfer a small sized SYNC License file to the USB drive. They provide detailed downloadable instructions on the site.

The instructions also state to plan on a 1 hour install, during which time the car/engine must be kept running, so I will install it tomorrow during a 2 1/2 drive I have to Penn State.

I will post back tomorrow night or Sunday and let everyone know how the install went on tomorrows drive.

You will need your VIN# and "SYNC ESN Serial Number". To get your SYNC ESN serial number, go to "Settings" on your SYNC screen. Then scroll down the screen and click on "About SYNC". Then be sure to scroll to the bottom of the next screen to get your "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)" number, not the "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)", which is listed first. You will understand why I gave those instructions when you go to the website. Another member mistakenly input the "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)", and wound up with an error code.

FYI: My current NAV Map file in my 2018 MKZ is "NA 1 16". I have been told that this update will take us to "NA 1 18"? I will post back with that information too.

Good luck.

Hi gang. Here is my SYNC 3, NAV maps install update. ?

The install went smoothly. First however, a few things to mention. In my initial post above, I left out one step on how to find your "SYNC ESN Serial Number" on the SYNC settings screen. Click on the gear icon/Settings button on your SYNC  screen. Then click "General" (forgot that step earlier). Scroll down and click "About SYNC". Then be sure to scroll to the bottom of the  next screen to get your "SYNC Serial Number (ESN)" number, not the "Onboard Modem Serial Number (ESN)".

Okay, to the install. Just a few things to mention/warn about. My  install began as the instructions detailed. So I settled in for my 2 1/2  hour drive, expecting the installation to take about an hour, as per  the instructions. However, after about 5 minutes, the Installation  Complete screen popped up for about 20 seconds (but then disappeared),  stating that the install had been successful, I could remove the USB and  the update would be complete once I performed a restart cycle of the  car (as per the instructions).

I felt that was far too quick, so I left the USB in, kept driving and  did not turn off the car. Then after a few minutes, SYNC rebooted and  showed it was still performing System Updates. It would reboot  occasionally. Show information screens, etc. About 30 minutes into the  drive, the same thing happened. Stated install was complete, remove the  USB, stop and restart the car etc., but the screen disappeared again  after ~20 seconds or so.

I  still felt that was too quick, so I left the USB in and kept driving.  Same result, reboot, and System Updating began again. Occasional  reboots, Information screens etc.

At about the 1 hour mark, the System Update successful screen popped  up again, stating the install would be completed once I performed an  engine stop and restart. I kept driving for several minutes, and this  time the screen stayed visible and did not disappear.

I then pulled over and performed the required restart cycle  of...engine/ignition off (I also opened my door to turn off Accessory  power), wait at least 15 seconds (I waited a minute), then restart.

After restarting, I went into SYNC settings to check my NAV maps  version. It was successfully updated from version "NA 1 16" to "NA 1 18". WoooHooo!

So if there  is a moral to this story, I guess it would be: Despite some early/false Install Complete screens, the install does seem to take ~1 hour. So  don't rush it, be patient, and ensure the install is actually complete.

Hope this information helps and good luck. ?

Glad it worked out....

Could be it was telling you at each file to remove... probably would have asked for the flash drive each time after.... ?

Not sure if this is true with 3.0 but 3.4 has about 7 files to use, then voices and gracenotes...

Hi Multitask.  In my case, once the download was unzipped, there was one folder (containing 6 files), and two separate, individual files to copy over to the USB drive being used.

The folder, titled "SyncMyRide" held 6 files as originally downloaded.  Then you downloaded a SYNC NAV license file and manually copy it into the "SyncMyRide" folder on the USB, as per the installation instructions. So that made a total of 7 files in the "SyncMyRide" folder on the USB. The other two individual files were titled: "autoinstall.lst" and "DONTINDX.MST".

So once everything was properly transferred to the USB being used, it held one Folder and two files, looking something like this (minus the Folder and File icons):

SyncMyRide

autoinstall.lst

DONTINDX.MST

I don't think it actually wanted the USB removed and the car restarted on those two premature messages (at ~5 and ~30-40 minutes into the install) telling me the "Update is Complete, Remove the USB and Restart the Car to Complete Installation" (again, I am condensing and paraphrasing). I believe they were glitches, since the screen required pressing "OKAY', but there was no time to read and press okay before the screen disappeared both times, on its own. Those are just my thoughts and observations. ?

And like yours, the informational messages during the install on my SYNC 3 version 3.0 did state the update can/may contain, Gracenote and Voice Command updates.

Hope this helps others.

Incase someone wants to know...

SyncMyRide is the folder that just contains the files needed

DONTINDX.MST is so that the unit does not Index the files

autoinstall.lst is the script the unit uses to tell it whet files to install from the SyncMyRide folder ... once complete, there is where the .xml file is put for the web site to update when it asks. (does not do it all the time)

I have yet to read if it matters the order in which the files are listed  ... I am guessing yes...

Mind posting a screenshot of the files inside the "SyncMyRide" folder ?

Hi TXFRDOnwer.  Here they are, as listed in my SyncMyRide NAV map update folder:

GB5T-14G386-ZA.tar.gz

HB5T-14G386-TAB.tar.gz

HB5T-14G386-TKB.tar.gz

JR3T-14G421-CD.tar.gz

JR3T-14G422-CE.tar.gz

JR3T-14G423-CB.tar.gz

JR3T-14G424-CD.TAR.GZ

If I recall correctly, the last file (JR3T-14G424-CD.TAR.GZ) was the SYNC license file, which is linked to the individual vehicle SYNC ESN serial number. It is a small, second file which you download after the NAV map update download (which was >13GB). You then copy that small SYNC license file into the SyncMyRide folder containing the first six files.

All of this will seem more understandable when you actually read the instructions and perform the download.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Way diff from the list I have, but then I'm a Fusion you are a MKZ .

You are still at 3.0 right?

Hi Multitask.  Yes, still SYNC 3.0, Build 18093. New, updated NAV version "NA 1 18". I copied and pasted the file names right out of the "SyncMyRide" folder on my computer desktop, so no chance of transposing, typos or other brain clouds. ?

When I double click on them on my Mac, it unpacks them and puts the files in a folder... so you can see what files they are... but are not useable at that stage... I do it to see what the file is for, usualy you can tell if it's a Map, or Apps, etc...

Because MacOS is based on Unix.........

As BFF2530 has noted, the map upgrade is problematic.  I have a 2018 Fusion Energi, I successfully upgraded the SYNC Software Update on Monday.  It is the map upgrade that I started trying on Monday night that has continued to say that the "upgrade has failed".  I had downloaded the updates and the license file several times, reformatting different USB sticks with exFAT32, extracting and copying the license file as per instructions over the week.  No obvious problems with the process other than the upgrade never progresses to "success".  I have left the USB stick in after several trips/restarts, the USB has been replaced at least 3 times.

The map has in fact updated, as my 5 year old street finally appears on the map.  Unfortunately, the remainder of the newer sections of the neighbourhood remain a farmers field.

The GPS is garbage as far as I am concerned, at least for Canada.  Last Sunday as I was trying to locate a nearby POI that has been around forever, the GPS could not find the "city", as it is a village, and the GPS was directing me to other destinations in other "cities" dozens of Km's away.  I didn't have this problem in Minnesota this summer with small "villages".

I hope Ford will work with Garmin on future LTM GPS's because I have never experienced anything like this to this degree with any of the GPS's I have owned over the years.
