Hey everyone, to any owners of the Platinum trim level of ford fusion have you experienced and tearing or wear in early life of your leather dash board? I ask because for the one year Ive owned my car Ive noticed the dash leather starting to tear and wear above the air vents (see picture)...dealer said they had nothing to compare to and they attempted to fix with some glue/epoxy but are replacing my dash under warranty. I was curious if this is a known issue or just with mine? Thanks

I have this issue.  Mine is not yet showing padding, but it seems to be separating nearly as much as yours is.  You say it was covered?  My 2017 Platinum is at 30k miles and is about 5 months from experiencing its first Texas summer, so I am a bit concerned.  Can you give me any tips on dealing with service so they don't turn me away?

To reiterate my PM to Chad. I went to my ford dealer service department and told them this was happening to my dash, they said they didn't have anything to compare to and tried to fix it, had no luck. They ordered and installed a new Dash didn't cost me anything as it was under warranty, i had around 28K miles on it, now over 30k miles. they did a great job and looks MUCH better.

Comparing the before and after photos, it doesn't look like an issue with wear or tear. Looks like the dash has a warp in the before pic. See the big gap over the air vent in the before pic.

It is nice and straight in the 'after' pic.

I did have he issue when i bought the car but it got worse over time, I do recall talking to a technician and he said the dash either was not installed properly at factory or it a defect of having a leather dash...was super happy it was covered under warranty and looked better after the install of new dash.

I apologize for reviving and older topic, but I thought this might help others with the platinum trim.

I have a 2018 Energi platinum 14,000 miles with the beginnings of similar dash issues. For me the pulling and warping issues are primarily located on near the defrost vent and the heads up display on the top of the dash. Mine is also beginning to pull at the same places your pictures show (though not as bad yet). I will post pictures soon.

On the advice of this and another thread, I did bring it to the Ford dealer to see if it could be corrected through the warranty. By happenstance there was another platinum in the lot when I got there, a 2017. I would say the dash warping on that one could be categorized as severe. Clearly pulling away from all of the “trim” pieces and showing the foam underneath.

I am confident that this is a “thing” with the platinum trim. I don’t know if the leather just absorbs and retains heat moreso than a vinyl dash, but it seems to be a problem. I’m sure having it sit in the mexican sun after manufacture doesn’t help. The issue also seems to be limited to the leather dash. Looked at a lot of non-platinums and didn’t see a warping issue on any.

So advice to Platinum owners, if you’re going to park in the sun, I’d invest in a solar shield. And if you’re still within the warranty period definitely take a look to see if you have any issues. Fingers crossed that Ford stands behind their work and corrects mine via warranty. I’ll keep everyone posted.

Update for anyone who is interested. Ford has agreed to replace the entire dash under warranty. I was all geared up to make my argument when they denied coverage, but they didn’t give me any pushback whatsoever. Definitely a known issue I’d say. I will post after pics once it’s done. In the meantime I’ll be researching preventative measures to make the new dash last as long as possible, as I’m sure it’s going to happen again eventually.

My 2017 Fusion Platinum’s dash is pulling apart at vents. Yesterday, I noticed, it was pulling away from the upper right of the touch screen.
it’s disappointing when you purchase a nice car, and things like this happen.   Called Ford, got no where!!

I have a 2017 Platinum and running into all of these issues as well.  The leather is pulling away from the foam on both sides near the corner of the windshield as well as in the middle near the air vents.  I brought it to the dealership and was told that Ford Corporate  would pay $1160 towards repairs leaving me with an additional $3150.  The car still has a re-certified warranty, but they're saying this is cosmetic and not technically covered.  I'm concerned it's pulling away enough to affect my emergency brake alert HUD display and possibly affect the air bag deployment on the passenger side.  Does anyone have any experience getting Ford to cover something like this?  The car is well under the 36k miles, but past the initial 3 year new warranty so it falls under the Ford re-certified warranty.  Cosmetic or not, the dash should not be coming apart on all sides after 3 years.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Itk. Well, it is not limited to being cosmetic, since it will affect the operation of the windshield defroster. And that could also fall into the realm of a safety issue. However, it will not affect the operation of the airbags, so don't bother trying to push that issue too far. Stick to the one that it will affect: The defroster.

What you can do is take a close look at your CPO warranty to see exactly what it covers/excludes. Then call Ford Customer Relations and file a formal request/report with them to have it looked at again.

I'm sure other members will have additional ideas. Keep us updated and good luck.

I have a Ford Fusion and I’m having the same issues!! It looks horrible. I took it to Ford and they tried to sell me another car!! Like wtf??? Anyway I’m so pissed. It’s a beautiful car otherwise. Hopefully they’ll recall it soon. I’m outside of my bumper to bumper too!! This should not be happening. Cosmetic or not...

The dude in parts said it was cheap thin leather, lol!! Considering the issues, I believe him. I just want it fixed!! Like now, lol!!

My 2018 Platinum is still good without these issues after 2.5 years. I have had a dashmat on mine since new and it is garaged most if the time which really helps.

I have a dashmat in all our cars, being in Phoenix with the extreme temps and have never had any dash issues including the 18 year old mustang.

just realized there were more posts on my thread...To reiterate my local dealer replaced my dash under warranty, and since replacement is holding much better than old one, I do use a sun shield and would also recommend one. Only small issue is the speaker cover piece occasionally pops up but i push it back down and good for a while.

CBP, when you say it was fixed under warranty, do you mean the original 3yr/36k or something beyond that? I have a CPO that's past the 3 years but still under the CPO and they won't cover it. I'm going to attempt to escalate it higher.

oh...sorry didn't mention, i got the extended warranty, and it was covered under that as i was just over the 36k original warranty, long story short when i bought car i had fords service plan, i sold back my plan ($1500 value) and got extended warranty ($1000) for free plus $500 towards car

Same thing with my Platinum!   2017, out of bumper to bumper warranty.   Ford service said it wasn’t covered,

Im going to tell them it’s a safety issue and look over my extended warranty! The leather totally split this summer, from the collision warning screen to the vent!

Good luck! I raised mine to Ford's escalation department and they said they'd cover about $1200 of the $4600 job. I tried to ask for a manager or something but the Ford rep wouldn't even pass me along. They said it's a done deal and I can't do anything about it. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the posts...I'm pretty upset with the damage, but helps to know I'm not alone.  My car is out of factory warranty, has a PremiumCare ESP plan, but I found out this week that it only covers mechanical and electrical issues, so the dash is not covered.  the warranty information clearly states what it covers and what it doesn't, so I expected that.  And my Fusion has high miles.  But just disappointing that Ford won't stand behind an obviously defective <something>  leather, dye, or whatever was used to cause this after only 4 years (first noticed right after the car was 3 years old).  And seeing this thread was why I thought Ford would still do something for me.  But, the were unwilling to offer anything aside from submitting it for review for a recall.

I'm also thankful for the mentions of price.  My local dealer gave me a quote for the part for $8949.27, and estimated $2000 for the labor.  So I searched for the part # HS7Z5404320UA and the first result was a dealership with MSRP of $4141.73, but current price of $2869.27.

So, even more disappointed now.  With the Ford Dealer who sold me the car and warranty that doesn't cover everything I wanted it to cover, with the parent company for not offering/agreeing to help cover it, with Ford for not already admitting there is something wrong with this part, and with my local Ford dealership for the price.  I tried to cover my bases, but am certainly to blame for not doing better homework and trusting the salesman.  And I can't do anything about that now.  This was my first Ford since 1990, and I love a lot of things about the car, but will be much less apt to buy one ever again.

Anyway, thanks again for your stories and feedback and for posting for others benefit.

Ian

I really appreciate all the detailed info. I tried to file a complaint through the BBB but didn't get any where either. There has to be some sort of recourse for this being a safety issue. Someone mentioned before that the window defroster is a safety issue so the dash coming up could definitely affect that. I don't know the first thing about a class action suit... Cost, number of participants, etc.

Hi Itk. I am the one who mentioned that you could try stating it is a "safety issue" in that it may hinder the front defroster air flow from properly defrosting the  windshield.

As far as class action lawsuits: Generally speaking, it would be expensive, unless one of you is a lawyer or knows a lawyer willing to do it pro bono, or you find a lawyer willing to take the case on a contingency fee (unlikely). And it would take forever.

In reality, most of you/us will have sold our cars by the time a case like this is settled.

Not trying to dissuade anyone from doing what they feel is best, only pointing out the realities.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Yeah, I agree. Stuff like this makes me want to avoid Ford. I know every company makes good and bad cars, but not covering something like this under a CPO warranty seems ridiculous.

I'll probably end up having to take it to an interior repair shop and see if they can glue the edges back down without redoing all the leather.
