2014 1.6M Engine Compression Issue?

My driveway is sloped down a bit toward the street about say under 5 degrees.  I always back the car up the driveway, pull the parking brake, put it in 1st and it holds the car fine.  Yesterday I parked the car, pulled the tab (electronic parking brake) and it didn't engage.  After I turned off the car, I released the clutch then the brake and the car rolled forward a good bit and then stopped.  I of course braked, pulled then pulled the tab again.  Then I became curious.  I turned off the car, left the car in 1st and let go of the clutch then brake.  The car rolled a foot, stopped,  rolled again and stopped and so on.  I am assuming this is to do with the engine compression.  Probably normal with the weight of the car.  Now I always use the handbrake so this is not going to be an issue but I am concerned that this may be a symptom of a deeper problem with the engine.  Why is the car not holding after rolling forward the first time?  Should I get a compression test or is it just normal with the size of the car and the small engine?  I tried the same thing with a manual Corolla and it rolled a bit and held.

Hi will. Of course the parking brake should always be used. However, the Fusion is not that large or heavy and your driveway is not that steep, so having it in gear should hold the car.

I could be off on the slope.  Could be a bit more than 5.  The car has under 92000k(57?m) on it.  The clutch was done a year ago with the recall although I never had a problem with it.  Lately I've been noticing shudder through the clutch pedal when starting from a complete stop. I don't think that would be related though.  The  1.6 coolant recall was done over a year ago and I was noticing coolant loss before hand, but no overheating.  Temp gauge has always read below the half way mark.  Oil every 8k kilometres.  Not sure what to do or if it really is a problem.  Of course the 5 years are up.  Does anybody else have a manual?

Hi will. Out of curiosity, try putting it in Reverse next time and see how the car reacts.

I looked very hard for a manual 1.6 but very hard to find in the used market here. It was a much better driver than the gen 1.5 manual transmissioned 2.5, but the one I drove they wanted way too much money for the condition of the car. I have driven many manual vehicles in the past even some with very high mileage and weak engines, and never had a problem with leaving it in 1st or reverse and not setting the parking brake, always held in place.

Update.  Took it to Ford this morning.  They wanted $200 to check the clutch.  Guy at the desk didn't even understand what I was talking about with the compression.  I said I'll go elsewhere.  Waited 10 mins for the jockey to return my car.  Here he comes slowly. Stall.  And again so I walk up to the car...he gets out while the car is rolling back.  I get in and it's quite apparent he burnt the clutch.   I go to service desk and mention this and the service manager comes out to go for a road test to make sure clutch is ok.  He says clutch is fine.  We go to a slight slope and back the car up it and put it in 1st.  Turn it off.  Same thing. Rolls stops rolls stops.  Then he brings out some laptop to test the compression.  Says if it's off a bit it should go for the wet dry leakdown blah blah.  Turns out it's 100% all four.  Prefect compression.

Now, was he handing me a line or I'm guessing all 1.6 manual fusions from 2013-2014 unable to hold a 5 degree slope in first facing forward with no handbrake.   I find that difficult to believe. I have never driven another manual car with this issue.  A good slope yeah but 5-10degrees?

Even while engine is at temperature.  Rolls forward in reverse, facing downhill.

Hi will70. Making an Internet diagnosis (hate doing this...lol), by making two assumptions...lol: First, assuming this behavior is not normal for the 2014 1.6L, manual transmission Fusion.

Second, assuming the car is solidly in gear (and no reason to believe otherwise) , it would seem there is a loss of engine compression. Especially since it seems to move a little and stop, move a little and stop etc. However, your Dealer's Service Department tested and stated the cylinder compressions are "perfect".

So...this would lead me to believe this may be an issue of normal behavior, due to the small engine size. Let's hope another member with a 1.6L manual will jump in with their own observations.

In the meantime, putting the car in gear and setting the parking brake (as everyone should anyway) would be your best bet. No need for the brick. ?

Keep us updated and good luck.
