stacyppl
So, I just bought a 2016 Fusion SE on 12/23/19. Only drove it from the dealership and home that night, no issues. The next day, 12/24, ran some errands around town. Was stopped at a light in the left lane, light changed, started to give it some gas, and nothing! I could not accelerate. The lights were on the dashboard, but the car was dead in the water. It was like it was in neutral. I put on my hazard signal and was able to get off the road. Put her in park, turned the car off and back on, started up perfectly. Ran more errands and it did the exact same thing about 2 hours later!!! This scared the bejeezus out of me! We could have been killed if a car behind me was traveling at high speed. I can't get to the dealership until Thursday morning. Anyone experience this? Thank you!
akirby
My guess is throttle body. It’s a 15 minute swap and the part is only $150 online (I think).
stacyppl
Thank you for your reply! I just bought this car 2 days ago. Considering that I spent all off my money to buy the car that is, apparently, unsafe to drive, the dealership needs to fix this!

Without a warranty the dealership isn’t obligated to fix it at all. That said it won’t hurt to ask and most reputable dealerships would fix it. But without codes it may be hard for them to diagnose.
bangster
There are a couple of things that could cause it, the codes should help track it down, be it TB or fuel pressure or fuel tank not venting. Depending on the state, there are rules in place to help in just this situation, and they also might just want to do right to protect their name. I purchased my 2015 Fusion from a dealer that mainly did higher end and unusual vehicles, but they got the mundane in on trade and to keep cars flowing and have inventory. In the first 2 days the battery died in it. I expected to make a trip to replace it, but my daughter called them and they replaced the battery for free. I doubt anything in the contract or from selling it says they had to do that, and it is a wear item, but we were referred there by someone that bought a higher end vehicle, and it seemed like a reputable place (they fixed a few things between buying it and taking it off the lot).
stacyppl
Interesting, the original document on the car had "Dealer Warranty" checked. The one she gave me had "As Is" on it. Yet, a 12 month/12,000 miles warranty comes with it! I am currently at the service department. Another customer told me he is having a similar problem. Can the dealership put the car on the computer to see if it's the throttle body?
stacyppl
I asked the service guy if they could just read the codes from the computer. He said if the check engine light isn't on, they can't read any codes!
bangster
They should be stored even if no longer happening, as historical. So when this happens you press the gas pedal and it doesn't rev up all right? I would expect to see the wrench light and the check engine light and it should set codes. That is different than when you press the gas pedal the engine revs up but the car doesn't move. Also depending on the miles might be covered by the factory powertrain warranty.
stacyppl
It does not rev up at all. Due to miles, the only factory coverage is corrosion. I don't know if I trust these people. I think I will go to Auto Zone and see if they can check the codes.
stacyppl
The service guy said if it is the throttle body, fuel pressure system, etc., that it would be covered by the little warranty I bought. So, I am about to take some side streets to the Auto Zone. Thanks guys!
stacyppl
So, Autozone tells me that they can't read the codes unless the check engine light is on. This is what the service guy at the service department for the used cars told me. I suppose some equipment is more sophisticated than others. Perhaps the equipment at the service department for the newer cars can check for codes (current and historical), but the equipment at these places cannot.
stacyppl
I never solved this problem. The car will still occassionally stop for no reason.
