Newbie advice buying Fusion 2012 or earlier

Hi,

I'm new to Fords and really to cars.

I want to buy a used car - and love the way the Fusion  2012 drives ( love the handling, seat comfort, solidity of the car)  so far.

But, I  have read all the horror stories about the transmission flares and bad shifting on this site and elsewhere.

Has anyone figured out any remedies that resolve the transmission issue? now that it's 9-10 years later?

Any chance Ford will actually recall these cars? (doubtful I am sure)

How risky is it to buy a used 2012 ? Anyone NOT had this problem....

Lastly, any other years that are better and do not have this issue - earlier or later or do they all have it?

Thanks!

There are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of this car and many many more of this transmission out there that have no problems with the transmission with well over 100/200k miles. I assume this is a 2.5 I4 or a 3.0 V6? It was in service in some Fords since 2007 and GM cars since 2007(!!).

A lot depends on the miles and care and fluid changes (which at 150k for first one way to many miles). I don't think there is and specific inherent issue with the first gen 6F35, personally I think they are under-rated for the V6 and there were some improvements made starting in 2013.

I assume you are testing cars and finding them with odd shifting? While most I drove were Sports with the Aisin transmission, I did drive quite a few 3.0, very few 2.5, 2010-2012 Fusions, and none of the exhibited any bad shifting behavior. I also drove Focus looking for a vehicle for my daughter and found nearly all of them suffered from the DCT issues and passed them up for a 2015 Fusion.

I haven't driven any with this problem. I've driven one that I really like so far. Most of it was research I did. So I appreciate the feedback that there are not ALL fusions. Just some. Hard to discern this from online reviews which I suppose are the ones who are unhappy and take the time to write in.

And yes I was asking about the 2.5 I4 not the V6.

Thanks!

There is newer firmware for the 6F35 used with the 2.5L/3.0L on 2010-2012. It fixes the shifting issues going from 2-3 and 4-5 where it would go into 'neutral', then slam into gear, then seem to need to relearn shifting. Now, it may do a 'power hold' during the shift, and shifts firmly but not hard. And even that happens much less often. I have a 2011 I bought used in 2013 and it was bad until they reprogrammed it.

So far, no really major issues. The most annoying right now, in warm weather, the front suspension creaks. There are several threads about what parts need replacing. Also, the SYNC part of the radio seems to crash at times. I have to shut the car off and turn the radio off (or at least open the door) to get it to reboot and work with the phone or my USB with music on it. The main radio itself (AM/FM/satellite) isn't affected.
