Ponyguy Posted February 4, 2020 Share Posted February 4, 2020 I'm new to the hybrid vehicle world, and I'd like to learn how the Hybrid powertrain works. I'm an old man, and an old hand at working on cars and light trucks, but hybrids are new to me. I know there's an electric motor and an Atkinson Cycle IC engine, but how are they married, and what sort of transmission arrangement is there? Is there an article about the "parallel hybrid system" that I believe Ford uses? An article or book which explains exactly how it works, and just what it is? bangster Posted February 6, 2020 Share Posted February 6, 2020 I wish I understood more on how it worked, and I think other than they don't touch on the PHEV and HEV differences (the battery on your PHEV is partitioned into EV only and Hybrid sections) and the fact that "Weber State" is pronounced "Weeeber State" I like these videos, dry delivery and wit and all! I've watched a couple of those videos from Weeeeber State already... the guy took about 30 minutes to deliver a ten minute TED talk on the HF-35 Transaxle... but it was pretty thorough. I didn't get an idea of the overall "powerflow" of the system, until I looked at that little video you offered... I saw that on my car's screen, too. A couple of questions I still have: What speed does the IC engine run? I get the impression that it runs at a constant (rather) high speed under "gas engine demand." Is it throttled at all? At some arbitrary speed, the IC engine comes on and adds thrust... given that we're dealing with connections in a planetary gearset, does the electric traction motor stop? The car has a regular 12 Volt battery (in my car, it's in the trunk by the left tail light); the powerflow video mentions that the lights and accessories draw power from the High Voltage battery. What does the 12 volt battery do? Is there an ordinary 12 volt alternator on the IC engine, too? Thanks, once again!
