Do misfire codes stay in memory?

Hey everyone! I'm hoping someone can answer this for me. I drive a 2017 Ford fusion se 1.5 ecoboost. My car is evolved in the satisfaction program for the water intrusion into cylinders. So I've been having misfire codes for about a week. I have a code reader after checking I would delete the code. My car went to dealer today when I talked to service guy he asked if I had deleted misfire codes. He then told me I shouldn't have because I'm over 60000 miles and they have to get approval to do the extended work. My question is does my Fusion have a memory bank that stores the history of codes that have been issued? My car has been running like crap I'm loosing coolant internally but he makes it sound because the codes were erased I may get denied the work my car needs so I'm just trying to get on top of this so I have some information to work with. Thanks Heath

The ECU stores codes but once you clear the code(s) with a scanner, they can't be retrieved.  That begs the question of why you would clear codes without addressing the issue that's causing the CEL to go on, especially a misfire code.  Clearing the code repeatedly does not fix the problem and it makes it harder for your problem to be diagnosed by the dealer,  as you've now found.   Driving with a misfire can ruin the catalytic converter and result in a substantial repair bill.

I would expect the CEL to come back on anyway at some point, since the problem is still there.

The reason I clearing code was I had a service appointment coming at end of week. I was having all the symptoms of the water intrusion and wasn't aware that the codes were permanently removed and I always use my code reader if light comes on to make sure it wasn't a different code. I know now not to clear them. Hopefully Ford will still allow the extended work. My understanding this includes a new short block. If not be a terrible way to learn a lesson!

It'll be interesting to see if Ford still covers the repair.  If so, then no one should be worried about the car going out of warranty should the issue arise later.  Right now, I'm planning on keeping the car until the extended warranty expires in 2023, but if the issue hasn't arisen by then, the car is history at that time.  BUT, if Ford agrees to still do the work free of charge after that...Kindly keep us updated.

They are hoping to have a answer for me by end of today! They were working on getting definitive proof of where my coolant is disappearing too. I will update as soon as I receive word from them. ?

Dealer called this morning. Cylinder 2's spark plug will not come out. They found the proof they needed. Interesting thing is the dealer is required to take pictures of the car and engine compartment and include them with the request for engine replacement. I'm assuming to verify that there were no after market mods done? Anyway all the docs are submitted and we are just waiting for Ford to approve or deny the repairs. Service manager said he didn't think there will be any issues. Fingers are crossed!

The documents supplied to the dealers before the CSP was announced (see Recalls thread 19b37) clearly indicated that no repairs would be approved unless the vehicle is under warranty and/or has an extended warranty.  I find your case VERY interesting.  No doubt there will be a Class Action about this, which, in a few years time, will require Ford to pay for new repairs and reimburse owners for previous out-of-pocket repairs.

That is the one thing he never mentioned is warranty. What he told me that any car that falls under this recall that has less than 60,000 miles doesn't need prior authorization to do the extended work. Because mine is at 80,000 he has to get approval first. He sounded fairly confident it would go through but did warn me they may not approve the the extra work. I hope I get lucky no way I can afford the repairs right now! Thanks for the info though!

If you notice it say vehicles outside bumper to bumper warranty must submit claim before starting repairs. It doesn't say anything about only repairing vehicles with manufacturers warranty or extended warranty. I found this on Ford owners web site under the csp # you gave me. Not say you are wrong but the way it is worded you are not required to have the warranty but have to have it approved first. It was submitted yesterday around noon. No call today but I will definitely keep you updated on the turn out!

Well they were able to remove spark plug without damaging the threads. Ford has approved a new short block. Parts are on the way. He told me it was just a bit over $4000 that Ford is covering for the repairs! I really love my Fusion and I am very happy Ford is going to this extent to keep customers happy! I've been driving my 98 Honda accord ex with the Vtec v6. It's much faster than my Fusion by far but the Fusion is so comfortable and has all the bells and whistles can't wait to drive her again!

  • 2 weeks later...

I thought I would update the status of my Fusion in case anyone was interested. I called service manager at Ford. That day was the 11th day after original appointment. He told me that all parts had arrived at the shop except for one. The block had not arrived. I immediately asked if it was on back order and his reply was no atleast he hadn't been informed of one. He said the invoice for the block arrived 2 days ago so wasn't sure when it will get there. Tomorrow makes day 7 from last phone conversation (18th day total) and no update. I'd rather get a disappointing phone call than none at all. I will pass along info as I get it! Hope everyone has a great weekend!
