7/6/2020 - New SYNC 3 Navigation maps update available.

Recommended Posts

Hi gang. On a related note, the SYNC 3 update pages on the Lincoln and Ford Owner websites have been updated. After inputting your VIN, it now informs us as to whether we are up to date, have any available updates, the current SYNC version number installed in our vehicle etc.

It now also has links to other pages that detail the instructions for how to update SYNC 3 via USB, WiFi etc. Far more informative and user friendly than before.

Good luck.

Hi again gang. I successfully updated my SYNC 3 Navigation system maps on a long drive yesterday. The latest version is NA 1 19

However, I would give the same warnings I have given to others on past updates: You may/will get a very quick notification (within minutes of beginning the update), essentially stating that the "Update is complete, remove the USB, restart the car..." etc.

However...Do not remove the USB and do no restart the car, etc! The update is not complete. If you leave the USB in and wait about 5 minutes, your SYNC system will reboot and the "System Update" will resume and continue. This may even happen a second time.

As the NAV maps website states, the update will take ~1 hour. Therefore, I recommend waiting at least 10 minutes after any "Update is complete" notifications before removing the USB and restarting your car, to ensure it is not another false notification.

In this way, you can be sure the SYNC system is not going to go through another reboot and resume the update. Just be patient and assume it will take approximately a full hour.

Hope these instructions are clear and understandable. Good luck.

I did the usb update and nothing. went thru system update and a reboot . Same map version 1.17. Called ford navigation line 1-800-900-8458 and got the SAME EXACT ANSWER as last year. Were aware of the problem and will address it in the next update.

What in the hell is going on here?

Hi sleepy, sorry, but I need to ask the same old questions. Not because I doubt what you did or did not do, but because we are going through the same issues with others here and on other forums, who, once we ask these questions, discover they did not follow the instructions properly. Some have placed the Zip file directly onto the USB drive, or not placed the License file into the SyncMyRide folder, removed the USB drive and restarted the car prematurely, etc etc.

So, did you precisely follow the digitally downloadable instructions on the Download Order Complete page concerning:

- Downloading the Zipped Map file and License file to your computer.

- Unzipping the Map file.

- Placing the unzipped Map files and License files in the correct places on a freshly formatted USB drive.

-With the engine running, inserting the USB drive into a USB drive in your car, following the instructions to run the car at least 1 hour to let the update go through several instruction screens (some of which require responses), and several reboots, before removing the USB and restarting the car?

As I have mentioned  previously, I and others received false "Update Complete" messages, as early as ~5 minutes into the update process. And I received 3 false "Update Complete" messages before the update actually stopped rebooting, beginning again and finally completing properly. If I had removed the USB and restarted my car after any of those false alerts, my update would have also failed.

The instructions must be followed precisely.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

I wish you all of the best with your Sync 3 issues.  However, Sync 3 has been verified to be a joke.

On Microsoft, and Ford.  They’re equally responsible for the early iterations of Ford Sync; later?  That’s on Ford, baby (and their subcontractors, and you wouldn’t believe where THEY come from);

MB, BMW, Audi & Porsche got their ‘digital things’ together, while Ford scrambled to keep things current.  Even GM fixed things before Ford did (if you can call that “fixed”).

It’s just like Toyota taking 10+ years to include ApplePlay!  If Ford shared their infotainment platform to another outfit, their Sync problems would’ve been next to nil.  Nissan achieved this with Tom Tom.

With research, you’ll find that Nissan isn’t alone...

Our Fusion is an earlier model, an ‘08 S.  No Sync there, thank goodness.  I use Apple Maps in my smartphone, or, heaven forbid (!), read an Atlas.

But if you’re trying to update your Sync OS in order to make things current (as in selling the vehicle), I get it.

Once again, I wish you all of the best.  Opening zip files notwithstanding... this, alone, is the reason why I stopped using anything Microsoft. Years ago.  But when you have lame 32-bit/64-bit data packets within kernels in a Unix shell, bad things can happen.  Especially if MS-DOS is anywhere near that OS...

LW & Mary Liz

Hi LW. Yes, the early SYNC system was Microsoft based (model year 2008+). However, SYNC 3, which was introduced in ~2016, is not a Microsoft based system.

In fact, SYNC 3 is a well regarded and award winning, integrated infotainment system.

Good luck.

Thanks so much for the info. I did do exactly as stated. Here's what's going on. It starts with the map update available and I follow the on screen instructions. It then displays system updating for under a second and then disappears and does nothing. Does this eventually take off? Appears my usb is doing nothing after that.

Hi sleepy. How long did you leave the USB in and leave your car running after it "disappeared and did nothing" (to paraphrase)?

Assuming you downloaded correctly, unzipped correctly, then placed the files correctly on a freshly formatted and renamed USB, the update will take ~1 full hour. If you removed it anytime before that, it was too soon.

Leave it in for an hour, as the instructions state.

If you leave or left the USB in for a full hour with the car running and it still seems nothing is happening, then I've run out of ideas and Ford will need to help you.

Keep us updated and good luck.

On the topic of Sync 3, it is based on the OS that Blackberry (RIM) uses, it's' not an MS product anymore.  More QOS now....

And of course , it depends on what you expected Sync and Sync 2 to deliver?  Sync 3 3.0 and 3.4 seems to be about as stable as can be, I'm sure they are just fixing bugs, 3.4 is much better then 3.0 but it has it's requirements as far as what can or can not use it.

3.4 19274 is what I have and I have not had any issue with it.  Even with using Android Auto most of the time.

When 4.0 comes out, it will start to compete with the Google and possibly the Apple products.... again, it all will depend on what hardware your vehicle comes with .

I would be interested on where you think Sync 3 has been 'proven to be a joke', I agree with Sync and Sync 2, MS and FOrd did not get it right there.

And your 08 probably has Sync , unless it was the base Ford.

Hi guys and gals. This thread was created to notify Ford Fusion Forum members about the newly available NAV maps update, and help them get it properly installed. Side arguments only make it hard for others to get the help they are looking for.

Therefore, I am going to ask that anyone/everyone interested in sidebar SYNC 3 is good/bad discussions continue the discussions at the following link (Where LW already has another SYNC/SYNC 3 grievance thread started):

Or alternately, feel free to begin your own SYNC/SYNC 3 related thread in the "Audio, Navigation & SYNC" sub-forum.

However, this thread will be solely for helping others with the new SYNC 3 NAV maps update, and further sidebar discussions/arguments will be removed.

Good luck.

? thank you.... going to give it a try tomorrow and do the full hour. If it's a no go it goes to ford to figure out. I've gone over the download process at least 50 times trying to see if I didn't do it right.

Yea, a few of us have done it and mentioned that it takes about an hour.  I've had to do some updates before that it seemed that it was done, then it starts up again...

of course I was using a USB 2 drive, so it took longer...  ?

Ok tried again and did what you all stated. It rebooted 3 times in an hour and 17 minutes using a usb3.0. The map appears to now be updated as the speed limits now show 70 mph on my tollway that's used to display 55. Shows system was updated however my map version still displays version 1.17 instead of 1.19. Calling Ford navigation customer support they are telling me EXACTLY as the last update that they are aware the update don't change to 1.19 but the maps did update. I'm sorry I don't buy it. Can anyone look on their screens if you did the update and see if it changed to 1.19 for me? I'm currently on the phone directly with ford with a 1 hour 47 minute wait

Hi sleepy. Are you asking us to check our own cars to see if the version updated to "NA 1 19". Then yes, my maps version now shows as "NA 1 19". When I performed the update, my NAV maps version definitely changed from "NA 1 18" to "NA 1 19".

I will also mention that when I performed last years update, it took a day or two and a couple of starts of the car before the version listing updated from "NA 1 17" to "NA 1 18".  I forget if it was later the same night or the next day. Perhaps that will happen with you this time also.

Keep us updated and good luck.
