Service Power Steering Now!

Recommended Posts

There is no fluid/reservoir.  Your Fusion has electric power assist steering (EPAS).  The system has detected a problem.  If you haven't yet, you may lose all power steering assist soon.

Per your owners manual:

Quote

STEERING 2.5L I4 engine and 3.0L V6 Duratec engine:Your vehicle is equipped with an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. There is no fluid reservoir to check or fill.

Quote

WARNING:If the message SERVICE POWER STEERING is displayed in the message center, the EPS has detected a problem with the system function. On the next key cycle the message SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW will be displayed and steering assist will be removed until the steering system is serviced. Have your vehicle taken to the nearest dealer as soon as possible.

Replacing sensors without knowing what the problem is potentially throwing away money.  What sensor would you replace anyway?  Search the forums and you'll find plenty of discussions regarding this problem. You will probably need to take the car to a dealer or well-equipped shop to read the codes and diagnose your power steering problem.

There was a recall on many Fusions dealing with possible problems. I think it was mainly software, but the dealer was also supposed to check other sensors to make certain they were working correctly.

The recall applied to 2011-2013 Fusions. Unfortunately, the OP's car is a 2010.

i ran a diagnostic on the car and it said it was the angle sensor??

Hi Ozzy. Then there is a good chance it is the "angle sensor". There is usually a DTC code. Then there is a troubleshooting tree to follow in order to narrow down the fault. If you provide the DTC code (or Google it yourself), someone here may be able to point you in a direction, or at least provide a start to the troubleshooting tree.

Good luck.

Hi Ozzy. It is your car and you can do whatever you please. Unfortunately, we can not fully/properly diagnose the car over the Internet. However, if the "angle sensor" is not the problem (which is entirely possible), then you wasted your money. That is what people call "Throwing parts at the problem".

You should have hopefully pulled a DTC code. That would help with a proper diagnosis.

As a first step, check for corrosion of the connector for the steering motor.

D-efinitely find the DTC and follow up with the troubleshooting steps before random parts replacement.

Heres the codes .. C1277-20

C 1963-20

Hi Ozzy. Sometimes, it is simply quicker and safer to call or stop by your Ford Dealer's Parts Department and ask them for the correct part number for your particular vehicle.

To ensure you get the correct part number, the person giving you the part number would need your VIN and access to the Ford parts database. Just winging it for a 2010 3.0L could wind up costing you money.

Good luck.

If you read the pdf, it tells you that the angle sensor is located inside the EPAS itself.

Did you check for a corroded connector and chafed cable as previously suggested? You didn't respond to my previous post.

If the connector or wiring has been damaged then a new rack wouldn't solve the issue.

Hello.. sorry for NECROing but we solved this issue on our 2010 fusion. First I cleaned the terminals and cables to the battery very well, then inflated the tire, then attached a ~400 dollar code scan tool from an autoparts store innova 5160RS. This solved our problem for now. We scanned and cleared all the codes and the esteering started no problem next crank. ,

No idea if this will last

I hope it does, but it is very unlikely.  Once high amperage electrical motors start to wear out there is no way to easily fix them.

Believe me, I hope your car, but as a mechanic I can say that electrical problems never go away without a fight.
