Ford Fusion 2014 Stripped Screw Head Problem

Recommended Posts

Hey there!

Unfortunately, my rear door lock actuator went out. I saw multiple videos on Youtube and I followed the same steps except for the removal of the door handle, this is because I did not have a T27 or T25. I tried multiple workarounds and they didn't work. I noticed that the screw was going out and decided to take it to a mechanic. The mechanic made the screw even worse! At this point, I am stuck, because I am unable to remove the door handle nor to screw everything back as it was! I was thinking of removing this panel (attached as an image) and exposing the door lock actuator assembly to be able to reach the undoable screw.

Please share your thoughts as they are highly appreciated.

Hi Pollie. I am not sure what the issue is. Is the head stripped and you can not turn it? Or is it turning but not backing out?

If the head is stripped, buy or borrow a "Screw-Out" type stripped screw removal set, in the correct size for that screw head.

If the problem is that it will not back all the way out: If I remember correctly , you do not need to fully remove the screw to remove the door handle, only loosen it to a certain point.

If there is still an issue, you may want to try a bodyshop for help.

Here is an example:

Hey BBF,

Unfortunately, I am unable to turn the screw nor to get it back into place (the screw is out of place).

Well, actually my screw is so loose but I am still unable to get the door handle out. My main goal is to change the door lock actuator and to do it, I have to remove the door handle. By removing the door handle, I'll be able to remove the door lock actuator assembly and thereafter replace the screw with another one (this is the screw attached to the door assembly: https://imgur.com/IwDRiNc)

Hi Pollie. Well...Internet guessing: Looking at that video/photo, and assuming it is the screw to the left, my guess is perhaps the screw was backed too far out of one or both of those square metal "grommets" (for lack of a better term). Perhaps the screw backed out of one or both too far and now the  grommet is out of place, holes not lined up with the screw, which is blocking the screw from turning back in? Again, I am only guessing here.

Hopefully one of our tech members will jump in with better advice. Or you may need to take it to a body shop, where I am sure they have experience working on these doors and the innards.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Hello there users.

Since the start of this thread, nothing much has changed. I tried taking it to several workshops and they were unable to fix the problem. However, I got to a conclusion that I have to turn the bolt in order to remove the door handle, which, if removed, will solve my problem.

Any ideas on how to turn a stripped blot head would be highly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Pollie. not sure what you mean by "workshops". Have you taken it to an automotive  body shop?

The fact that you took it to several "workshops" makes it difficult to picture why they could not remove it. And if a professionals could not remove it, how difficult a removal it is in this case.

On your own...There are some specialty removal tools. It all depends on what kind of access you have to the stripped "bolt head", and whether you have access to the nut or the head of the bolt.

If you have not tried an automotive body shop try that first. You can also try your local hardware store, Lowe's, Home Depot and ask for someone in the hardware department to help you purchase an "Easy out" or other stripped screw/bolt extractor tools..

To remove stripped nuts, take a look here: https://www.streetmusclemag.com/tech-stories/10-tricks-remove-stuck-seized-stripped-bolt-nut/

To remove stripped screws, bot heads, see here: https://www.lowes.com/n/how-to/remove-a-stripped-or-broken-screw

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Hello.

Thank you all for your input. I have finally managed to access the internal parts of the door assembly to remove the door handle, which then gave me access to the stripped screw.

Wish you all a good day!

Glad to hear that it finally worked out, and thanks for updating us.

Pollie,

I currently have your exact problem with a 2016 Ford Fusion SE. Would you mind sharing your resolution with me? I would sure love to save the time and heartache you endured! :)
