How much is my car worth?

Hi All Who Read This:

How much is my 2015 Ford Fusion worth if it has transmission problems? I am either going to trade it in at a dealership, sell it to Car Max, or sell it privately? Please message me on here. The color is grey and it has approx, slightly, over 146000 mi on it. I am the original owner and I bought it used, certified when it was only 6 mos old.

Thanks,

AMM

Hi AMM. Need a lot more information than model year, color and mileage to even begin to determine a ballpark used car price. For example: What kind of "transmission problems" and how severe? What trim level, i.e. SE, SEL etc. What engine? What equipment/options? What general condition is the rest of the car in... etc, etc..

As andyross mentioned above, your best bet is to go to Edmunds.com, KBB.com, NADA.com, etc...then work up the pricing for both Private Party and trade-in sales. That will give you a baseline on how to determine what to ask and what you should expect to get for your car.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

We can't tell you how much it's worth.  You haven't furnished any details about the car other than the year mileage and color.  What model, what engine, what options, etc.  Condition of body and interior.

As posted above, use an internet guide.  I find that  NADA guide tends to be more accurate than Edmunds.  Check local ads as well since prices follow regional trends.

I will say that with 146K and transmission issues, it's not worth a whole lot.

Edit: Looks like bbf2530 beat me to it.

I want to sell or trade. Which one is better? Edmunds doesn’t take into account that my car has transmission problems. Any ideas? I’ve also tried kbb, but they gave me no answer unless I sign up to offer my car to for cash.

Ok so, my car has transmission problems and likely needs rebuild or replacement. A few small dings on left side fender. Some small rip on the inner seal on the base of the driver’s side door. That’s really about it.

If you're talking about a private sale vs. trade-in, you'll always receive less on a trade-in.  If it's a new car dealer,   they're not going to put your car on their pre-owned lot.  They'll wholesale it out to an auction house.  Hence, they'll offer you a lowball amount because they can't make much from your car.

BTW, how can you be the original owner if you bought it used?

Lol, you’re right. I completely let that slip my mind. I bought it used, certified. Ok. So how much to sell privately?

HI AMM. As drolds1 and I mentioned, we can not ascertain how much your car is worth. We do not know the trim level, engine, equipment/options etc etc. And "transmission problems" does not give us much information.

Any estimate we give will be a blind Internet guess and of no value to you.  All you can do is use the Internet resources we offered, then go from there. And you can get pricing from KBB, you just did not follow the proper prompts. I just did a test run by pricing one of my cars.

So go to the sites tha andyross, drolds1 and I offered:

https://www.edmunds.com/

https://www.nada.com/

https://www.kbb.com/

Then work up the prices and assume ballpark figures of $1,000-$2,000 less for the transmission issue. But again, that is just a blind Internet guess, since we do not know how bad the "transmission problem" is. In a private sale, how educated the buyer is also comes into play as to what you can legitimately ask and get.

For CarMax and Dealer trade-ins, they are the experts and you will be at their mercy. As drolds1 stated, you will get a lowball offer.

As drolds1 also mentioned, selling your car privately will almost always get you a better price than trading-in to a Dealership, assuming you can find a private buyer who is interested, of course.  If you do not find a private buyer, then CarMax or a trade-in would be your last resort.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

So my transmission slips, jerks, rpms rev - but the car doesn’t speed up, and slows down instead.

Hi AMM. Sorry if we have not been clear enough with our replies. It is extremely difficult for others to work up a blind Internet price on a used car. Even if you answered all the questions we have asked, which you have not answered yet, our estimates would not be accurate. There are simply too many variables for another person, who can not see or drive the car, to give an accurate used car value over the Internet.

You will need to go onto the websites that have been linked to above and work up the price. Then subtract what you think the transmission problem may be worth to fix. That will give you a starting point with which to price your car for a Private Party sale, or what to expect on a Trade-in.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.
