Airbags deployed

All of the side airbags deployed turning into and parking at a convenience store. These are the same Takata bags that have been under recall on other models. I realize it is out of warranty but if they are covering them on some vehicles. Why not mine? The dealer wants over 8k to fix it. That's lawsuit money. Any help?

Sorry that this happened to you, but these are not the same Takata airbags subject to recall.  No side airbags are part of the Takata recall.  Only the front passenger side airbags for 2006-2012 Fusions are subject to recall.  There have been no such recalls for 2016 Fusions.

Dd you go over the curb on your way into the parking lot or have you run over any debris in the road recently?   Did the dealer inspect your car to determine a possible cause for airbag deployment?

My car has 38,000 miles on it. It has been well taken care of and serviced regularly. I didn't hit anything per the video from the store. I had just parked and put the car in park and the loudest noise I have ever heard. I'm just thankful I wasn't driving. It did get a lot of rain from hurricane Laura but the dealership cannot tell me what caused it so the insurance will not pay for it. With all the problems Ford is having with airbags, and the dealer I bought it from can't tell me what caused it. I think someone up the chain needs to tell me something. We have been a Ford family for many years, an F-150 Platinum.a F-150 limited a Lincoln MKZ, and a Navigator just recently. This was very dangerous and an $8,000 bill for something that should not have happened out of the blue.

Hi Sltruman. I'm also sorry this happened to you.

A few thoughts: First, you do not mention what model year your Fusion is. There is an extended warranty on the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) and certain components. You need to take out your Owners Manual and Warranty Guide to see if you are still within those coverage are. If you do not have them, you can download the PDF versions here: https://www.fleet.ford.com/parts-service/resources/owner-manuals/

Next...As drolds1 mentioned, the side airbags were not/are not part of the Takata airbag recall. Only the front passenger/dash airbag is involved in the recall for your car.

And the Takata airbag recall is not for spontaneous airbag inflation with no collision (which is what you say happened in your case). It is for metal fragments possibly being propelled (like a hand grenade), if the airbags are triggered in an actual accident.

And you say "someone up the chain needs to tell me something". Who have you contacted other than the Dealership? Have you contacted Ford Customer Relations and registered a formal complaint report? I would recommend you do that immediately. Although the Dealership may do that, do not count on it.

You also need to dispute/challenge the decision by your insurance company. They don't need to know a reason it happened. It happened. And if there is no damage to the exterior of your car, it obviously as not due to a collision.

This should be covered under the "Comprehensive" portion of your insurance policy. It would not be covered under "Collision". Do you still carry "Comprehensive" on your car? I always advise people to keep "Comprehensive" even if they eventually drop "Collision" coverage.

Keep us updated and good luck.

I hope you can get some satisfaction from Ford on this.  There have been cases of spontaneous airbag deployment.  Here's the story of one woman's case.  I'd also report it to NHTSA.  If there are any similar cases to yours, it could eventually result in a recall.

Please keep us posted.

bbf: the topic's posted in the 2016 Fusion sub-forum, so I assumed that's the MY of the OP's car.

The way people post all over the place in random sub-forums, I never take anything for granted Art.

So if that is the case, the Supplemental Restraint System Warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles. And a spontaneous airbag deployment would certainly be covered under that warranty.

Sltruman, you need to point this out to the Service Manager at your Dealership. If you can get no satisfaction there, then immediately contact Ford Customer relations. I would also take drolds1's advice and report it to NHTSA.

Keep us updated and good luck.

LOL about locations of posts?  Good point on the SRS warranty.

Yes, the car would be under warranty if I had not misread the mileage it is 68,000. I have seen in the past where manufactures have paid for repairs'  this close to warranty expiration. Still, this is a dangerous safety problem that no matter the age of the car should be addressed. We can't have cars with this problem on our expressways no matter the age. USAA says it is Ford's problem and ford says it is an insurance problem. I have called Customer relations four times and have yet to get their call back. I guess I need an attorney.
