Greenhandle
My godson recently got his first car: a 2012 Ford Fusion SEL 2.5L I recently helped him do his first oil change, fluids & air filter check, and deal with squeaky belt. We had fun doing it. As far as I know, it was his first experience with turning a wrench. I made sure he crawled under the car, got greasy, and helped with each step. (His dad isn't mechanically inclined.) For Christmas, I'm going to set him up with a 'starter' tool set. All my vehicles have been older, foreign, or GM. (Well, unless I go back to when they still used SAE tools....). I know a little about the different wrench size standards, but don't have a clue what sizes the Fusion will need. (I can't afford full 'master' sets of sockets and wrenches, and some will be handed down from tools I already have. I'm going to pick good quality, but relatively 'budget' sets when I need to buy new stuff.) Can you all clue me in on which size formats the Fusion uses? I think one of the standards is 10, 12, 14, 17, 19 mm, while other options might be 10,13, 17, 19, or 10, 13, 15, 18mm, or ?? I'm afraid the first time he needs to use them, I'll have gotten all the wrong sizes...
eGuru
Don't forget the 7, 8, 9, 10mm sizes
Greenhandle
Thanks for the reminder, eGuru ! I didn't list the small sizes since they seem to be universal across all the metric 'standards'. My garage set has 7,8,9, but I can't recall using any but the 8mm. (I know the sets I keep in our cars only have 8mm.) Am I likely to run into 7mm or 9mm on the Fusion? Similarly, I think the DIN standard (European) lists an 11mm, but it's for a pretty uncommon bolt diameter. I added one some time ago in my garage kit, but don't think I've ever used it, either. (And I understand a 7/16" does a good job as a substitute for 11mm, and I've always got those around....) eGuru
You need a 7mm & 13mm to perform an oil & filter change.
Greenhandle
Ahh... I'm guessing the 7mm must be for the hatch in the splash guard? I didn't remember that. If it's for that, I have a nice 1/4" Kobalt ratchet set in his kit-- I'll check to make sure it has 7mm, and avoid buying a dedicated combination wrench. (I think I've got a small Craftsman wrench set on the way, and I think it only has 8mm in the under-10mm range.) bbf2530
Hi Greenhandle. Welcome to the Ford Fusion Forums. It is very nice you are helping your grandson to learn how to take care of his car, set him up with some proper tools etc. My father did the same for me many years ago. I hope your grandson listens and appreciates what you are doing. On a side note: The "Welcome" sub-forum is for new members to introduce themselves, say hi etc. Since your thread and questions have more to do with maintenance than a "Welcome" type of post, it will be moved to the "Maintenance, Recalls & TSB (Technical Service Bulletins)" sub-forum. Good luck. Edited October 28, 2020 by bbf2530
