2012 Ford Fusion SE - Maintaining a good battery charge.....

Good morning,

The battery of my car is kind of old (two years old).

I found on Amazon a potential solution for that:  MOTOPOWER MP00205C 12V 800mA Automatic Battery Charger, Battery Maintainer, Trickle Charger, and Battery Desulfator.

Is somebody using this accessory?

How does it work, do I need to bring the battery in my house?

Thanks!

Hi Gheorghe. Several questions and statements, so several answers: First and most important, as far as how it works...You should follow the instructions that come with the charger.

Next...No, you do not remove the car battery and bring it in the house. That would be a rather tedious and self defeating way of doing things. So assuming you have a garage or access to connect/plug-in the charger in and have it in/by the car...No, you would not bring the battery in the house.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for the answer!

Unfortunately, I do not have a garage. So the item I was talking about is not a good solution.

The next one that came into my mind is to use a solar powered battery.

I have no idea about it, do you?

Regards,

Gheorghe

Hi GHEORGHE. Have you had battery problems? What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Hi,

I am trying to extend the life of my current battery.

Buying a new one is the last option........

Any idea?....

(Thanks for your time!)

Hi GHEORGHE. If your battery has removable cell caps, you can maintain it by topping off each cell with distilled water. Do not use tap water, the minerals and contaminants can harm a battery.

Other than that, there is not a lot you can do. Don't run your battery down by using accessories with the engine off. Use a trickle charger if your car sits unused for long periods of time, if you can (unfortunately, it seems you can not).

Other than that, a battery life is a battery life, generally speaking. Modern cars are heavily computer/electronic/electrically reliant, so car battery life tends to be shorter now than in the "old days". So if we get 3-4 years, it means we got our moneys worth.

I'm not sure where you are located, but a new battery only costs ~$120 or so. It is not a large expenditure for something that lasts 3-4+ years and takes the abuse it does.

If you are short of money, then simply drive your car until the battery finally gets noticeably weak and/or fails. That will get you the most for your money out of your battery. Unless of course, it fails in the middle on nowhere, and you need to be towed or call for roadside assistance and pay out of your own pocket.

If any other forum members have additional recommendations, I am sure they will jump in to help.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just checked the Autocraft Gold Battery that came in my 2010 Fusion Sport that I bought last month.

It has a sticker that says it was installed June 2014, so it's six years old and that makes me nervous of the impending freeze we have coming in the next couple days. I know extremely cold temps can kill an older battery.

In our last Ford, we had a Motorcraft battery that lasted six years, so I'm wondering if I should go with another one of those, or a well-rated aftermarket replacement like an Interstate?

Is there a general consensus which is the best battery for our cars?
