Heat, heated seats, heated steering wheel not working on remote start

Recommended Posts

I tried to follow a couple links from google to find other posts on this topic but the links won't bring me there, and I can't find them in all the posts here. So I'm sorry this is a repeat. I recently lost my heat, heated seats, and heated steering wheel during remote start. They used to come on. They don't any more.

Hi Drball83. Things like this are extremely difficult to blind diagnose over the Internet. More information may help, such as model year, trim level etc.

Also, is your 2017 Fusion still within the 3 year/36,000 mile New Car Warranty? If yes, make an appointment to have it properly diagnosed and repaired.

If out of warranty, the first thing I would recommend you check would be your Owners Manual for the Fuse panel location/lists. Look in the Index under "Fuses".  Determine the proper fuse/fuses and the fuse panel location (under the drivers side dash up above the dead pedal), and check the fuses designated for the heated seats and heated steering wheel. If bad, replace them. However, keep in mind if they blew, there was an underlying reason which is still there and may/will cause them to blow again.

If you post your vehicle information, one of our tech members may be able to give you more to go on. However, properly diagnosing electrical issues in person is difficult enough, let alone over the Internet.

Check the fuses, let us know how you make out and good luck.

Thanks for the reply. It's a 2017 Fusion Energi SE Premium. The Climate control, Heated seats and heated steering wheel all work normally other than than on remote start. It is under factory warranty, however, as a former Ford Senior Master technician and with the inconvenience of taking it to the dealer I'd rather fix it myself. I have access to PTS and an IDS with current level software. I didn't see any helpful TSBs or SSMs on OASIS, tried reprogramming the BCM and even double checked As-built with FORSCAN to make sure I didn't make any changes that interfere with operation. I've been running a Navigation APIM from a different vehicle, with as-built changed to fit this one, problem free for the last 2 years, but even though I don't think that's the issue, that's the first thing the dealer will flag as an issue. Admittedly, I haven't tried putting the original APIM back in. I was hoping to find someone who had dealt with this before and done some sort of firmware change or reprogramming of a module. Any input is appreciated. In the meantime, I will try reinstalling the original APIM.

Hi Drball83. Oooops, sorry, missed the remote start part of your post.

As a former Ford Senior Master Technician, you are better informed than the majority of us shade-tree mechanics here...except for 2 or 3 of our tech member expert exceptions.

I obviously assume you checked the configurable Driver Information Center settings, to be sure the heated seats and steering wheel are still set correctly to turn on with a remote start? Just in case they were accidentally changed?

That is the best I can offer. Perhaps one of our tech members will jump in with some more technical expertise.

Keep us updated and good luck.

Ok so I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy.

The car is a 2019 Fusion Energi.

Everything used to work fine, AC and cooled seats would come on during remote start (hot weather), and heat, heated seats and heated steering wheel would come on when it was cold out.

And these items would come on even if I had all climate control shut off when the car was shut down.  (settings set to "auto" in menus)

Then at some point these things just stopped working with remote start, including AC.  I did have an issue where my driver's seat would not heat or cool at all, and that was fixed by the dealer.  I can't be sure if my problems started with that failure, and I can research what they did if it helps.

So I first told my dealer about the AC issue, because it was hot out.  They told me NO, it's not supposed to come on unless you were using AC when you shut down the car, or at least leave it in Auto mode.  That's INCORRECT, since that is not what the manual says, and I know absolutely 100% for sure it worked correctly in the past.  So they just tell you it's normal so you go away I guess.  Basically they don't know how to fix it.  And with a quick internet search, I am not the only person with this problem, it is widespread.  I don't understand why Ford can't tell us why this is not working correctly.

Maybe there some other sort of programming reset I can try?

I did try a couple of things to correct it.  I tried disconnecting the 12V battery for about 15 minutes.  And I tried a master reset of sync.  Neither one fixed the issue.

Someone at Ford....  help !!

Hi Teleplayer. I have not read the 2019 Energy Owners Manual to see how the settings work. However...assuming your Fusion is still within the 3 year/36,000 mile New car Warranty, try another Dealership, and/or call Ford Customer relations to have them step in to help.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Teleplayer, I fixed mine yesterday. I reset the FCIM, which is the module that runs the climate control, and the IPC (instrument cluster) which is what tells the body control module what the settings are for remote start, so it can command the FCIM to turn the climate functions in. I'm not sure if the resets were necessary, because the heat, steering wheel, and seats still weren't working after the reset. But then I went into the settings in the cluster and changed the option for the climate to be previously set instead of auto, turned the heat on and she the car off. I then opened the door so everything powered down and performed a remote start. The blower motor came on, and the coolant warned up. So I switched it back to auto in the cluster and turned off the heat, turned the car off, open the door and true again. The heat came in with remote start this time, and when I ordered the start button on the dash, it turned off because I had it off when I shut the car off last. So it worked exactly as it should. The seats a wheel didn't turn on this time. So I went in the remote start setting in the cluster again, turned off the steering wheel, baked out one menu, went back in and turned the wheel to auto. Then I tried the remote start again. This time I had heat and the heated steering wheel was on when I pushed the start button on the dash. I repeated the same steps to turn off the seats, then turn them back to auto and retried a remote start. Now everything is working as it should. I would try changing the settings to what you don't want, backing out of the menus, then turning them back on the way you do want and trying a remote start. It seems like the BCM got confused about the settings for some reason, but figured it out after changing them back and forth. Hope this helps. If anything isn't clear, I can try and clarify it for you. If the menu changes don't work, I can let you know what fuses to pull to reset those modules and then try the menu changes again.

Hi gc1121. Pull fuse 12 from the BCM fuse panel, behind the dash in the left side, and leave it out for 5 minutes. Then reinstall the fuse. This should reset the module. Then try changing the settings in the instrument cluster -

Climate to last setting, seats and steering wheel off. Key off then on. change the settings back to what you want (auto, on, on....) And try a remote start. Hopefully that should work for you. If that doesn't work, try resetting the Instrument cluster by removing fuse 10 from the BCM fuse panel and change the settings back and forth. Then remote start and see what you get. Good luck!

Drball83, You are a genius!  I followed your procedure and now everything is working as it should.  I did not pull fuses, but a week or two before I had disconnected the 12V battery, which may have had the same effect to reset the system.  So I don't know if the reset is necessary, but I do know that your method works!  I'm thrilled that it's working again.  Thanks !!!! ?

Why doesn't FORD know how to do this ?????

Teleplayer, I'm Happy to help. I'm glad it worked for you too. The guys at the dealer could probably figure it out, but flat rate pay doesn't encourage taking time to really find the problem or a solution. Lucky for me I have the knowledge, access to information, and the time to obsess over it until I can solve it ?

Hello,

I have a 2017 ford fusion and when I use the electric start ( key fob ) to start the car my heater and seat warmer does not turn on. They both work great when the car is running and me driving.  I'm not sure what had happened cause they were working and now all of a sudden it does not. Please help with any suggestions..

Sweet Jesus, I've been dealing with this issue for over a year and I've tried everything recommended in this thread as well as a number of others, including FORscan and software updates.
I cannot seem to get this issue to resolve itself.

I noticed the issue over a year ago. First, I noticed that my car was no longer adjusting the climate with remote start. It was simply using whatever my last settings were for the climate (sans heated or cooled seats which is also a bummer!). Oddly enough, when I remote start my car, my passenger seat will turn on either the heated or cooled seat. My driver seat does nothing. Second, my reverse camera is now working 100%. Prior to this, the camera was about a 50/50. Sometimes it would work fine, other times no image, other times the lines were removed and the image was actually reversed. I've had zero issues since the change that corresponded with the climate control being greyed out. I have called a number of dealerships and nobody seems to be familiar with this issue and they tell me it will take them likely a few hours of diagnostics (at $180/hr!) to maybe solve it.

If anyone has anymore recommendations or lives near Kansas City, I would forever be in your debt if you can help me with this.
