piratepress
Last night, I went WOT to pass a slow-moving vehicle when I detected a brief pinging that sounded like detonation. Of course, the manual recommends 87 octane, but I'm wondering if I might possibly benefit from some 89 given the circumstances. I'm also thinking it could be just a bad batch of gas. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this?

Do you purchase your fuel at major name brand fuel stations and avoid off-brand/convenience store types of stations? Could also be any of a myriad of other causes. If it winds up being a one time thing, then it is nothing to worry about. A "brief pinging" is nothing to worry about. If it was pinging, it sounds like the Engine Management System did its job and dialed things back to stop it. If it happens again, try getting your gas somewhere else. Still happens, try going to 89 or higher octane. Still happens, perhaps time for new plugs etc? How many miles on your Fusion? Let us know how you make out and good luck.
piratepress
Thanks, I always buy Top Tier gasoline- usually Chevron, or if it's not available, Shell. Plugs are 10 years old, but only have 37K on them. I'll continue to monitor it, but was thinking it could also be the nasty "Winter Blend" gas. I've had issue in the past with my other sports cars also pinging during the winter months even when running 93 octane.
akirby
Winter blend lowers fuel economy due to the formula but it should never cause knocking, Sounds like the station has bad gas.
piratepress
UPDATE: It's been a month and it hasn't reared its ugly head again, so it thankfully must have been a fluke. And with 93 octane going for around $3.50/gallon in my area (and forecasted to keep going up) I'm really glad I can run 87!
