MoreTrife
So I have a loud humming at all times, speeds up and slows down with car speed. Have extended warranty, took it to dealer. Told me the wheel bearing was going bad but since there is no play the extended warranty company wouldn't pay for it. This humming is really annoying. Some decent vibration too. Is it safe to drive on if the steering is fine? Thanks for any help.
idanny76
I have a similar situation. I have a humming sound, but I can't pinpoint where it is coming from. I check all the wheels and could not find any play. It doesn't become loud enough until it goes above 35 mph. Which wheel bearing was the one making the noise? and Did you ever get it replaced? You may not have gotten a reply, because you posted to the Maintenance part of the forum and not the Engine/Powertrain section.
Goneracin
I have replaced both my rear wheel bearings over the life of my car. Both times they only made noise, no play. If I remember correctly, the bearings are pressed together, so if they fail, the only think holding your wheel on is the brake rotor. I would ask the dealer if when it fails the warranty company will cover the needed pads, rotor, caliper and maybe more since they will all be damaged. If I remember correctly its a $75.00 part from Ford, and easy to change. This is why extended warranty companies suck. If you have the ability, I would say change it yourself, especially if you have a deductable. In my opinion, I dont mess with wheel bearings, they just get more expensive the longer they make noise.
